Has anybody made an ABSOLUTE minimum installation of Windows for
Workgroups 3.11?
I need to install it on a flash card with nothing else than
- the Windows kernel
- peer-to-peer netbios network w/ NETBEUI protocol
- PC configured as a file server

Which files are a must? Which files can be deleted? What is the
minimum content of WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI?

Thanx in advance

While I've never DONE this I was intrigued enough with the idea to save
the following information from an old thread here.

I'm not sure what files are not needed, what you can do is to to a
custom install and then NOT install all the stuff you don't want. Doing
this will NOT install write, notepad, the games, the netwrork stuff, the
tutorial, etc. You can also skip installing printer drivers this way.
While this may not be the bare minimum, it will give you a much smaller
foorprint than what windoze.3x normally takes up.

You might want to go with basic Windows 3.1 or 3.11 and then just install
the DOS networking software that enabled non-Workgroups versions of 3.x to
be networked. Might have less clutter that way, but I don't know. Just a
possible suggestion. Also, when you install Windows you can use advanved
install which lets you pick and choose what you want as far as applications
like Paint, sound recorder, games, etc.

Hi,
Information on two "minimalist" installations of Windows have been
posted here in the past, called "Peephole" and "Shards." They both
fit on single floppies; I tried them and they do work. I'd think that
a Google search would turn up recent info on them, but I don't
remember details of where I downloaded them.

Cheers, Alan

HBj:

If I understand what you want correctly, you require Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 to be able to share files via a network using the
NetBeui protocol while occupying the smallest amount of disk space.

I was intrigued enough by your question to try an experiment. I "Cloned"
my functional archive of MS DOS 6.2/WFW 3.11 that had the Y2K patch,
Win32s and TCP/IP32 patches applied. I then started "pruning" the system
starting with the games, True Type Fonts, Terminal, Write and anything
else that was obviously not essential. I then ditched "Program Manager"
as the shell in favor of "File Manager", since a file server would not
be running many applications. I kept "Notepad" as a convenient utility
that did not take up much space. I went through the .DLLs and eliminated
anything that was not needed as well (OLE stuff, FAX stuff). The results
are as follows: a network enabled version of Windows for Workgroups 3.11
in ~7Meg (plus the swap file). The underlying DOS could be minimal as
well and would not expand the footprint much. One possible problem with
such a setup is that it could only deal with "8.2" file names but if
this is respected it should work.

More knowledgeable readers will, perhaps, be able to suggest further
pruning as I have no idea what some of the remanning files do. Some
files Windows will not let me remove because they are "in use" but there
may be a way around this.

Well, I've never tried to strip it so hard! :-)

Just kidding, of course. Thanks for useful information about the
essential files!

Nice catch.

That SHOULD have been "8.3". i.e. the short short file names used on
DOS / Win 3.x systems
