actually, on September 10th (as soon as the info was available in
electronic form) i did post the "official" announcement of the PDC,
in the comp.os.ms-windows.announce and news.announce.conferences
newsgroups.
the below version is a little more up-to-date than the printed brochure,
and it contains a corrected phone number which was in the previously-
posted electronic version.

1993 Win32 Professional Developers Conference
WHAT: This conference will provide you with the in-depth information you
need to get a jump on developing for the next versions of the Windows
and Windows NT operating systems, code-named "Chicago" and "Cairo".
You'll also learn how to create great applications and device drivers
for these next generation operating systems by implementing key
Windows-based technologies today.
NOTE: As we will be covering confidential information on pre-release
software, we *need* a signed non-disclosure agreement from everyone
who attends the conference.
This is not a marketing event. There will be no neckties, no sales
pitches and no beginners.
Key Microsoft architects and developers will lead over 75 sessions,
including general sessions and more focused breakout sessions. They
will also be available to answer your questions.
WHEN: December 13-17, 1993
WHERE: Anaheim, California, USA
Register today as space will be limited. Call (800)233-1729. Conference Fee
is $995 if you register on or before Oct 15, and $1095 after. See below for
more conference details.
What will we cover during this week? There will be 5 main areas of
discussions:
1. 32-bit Windows-based Computing
During the conference, you'll learn how to develop Win32-based
applications that will run on all the Windows operating systems including
Windows 3.1, Windows NT, "Chicago" and "Cairo." We will offer detailed
sessions on writing multithreaded Win32-based applications that take
advantage of the multitasking capabilities of Windows NT and "Chicago."
We'll also show you how to exploit the symmetric multiprocessing
capabilities of the Windows NT operating system. And you'll discover how
the Win32 API has been extended to include new technologies that your
applications will be able to take advantage of in future versions of
Windows.
2. OLE 2.0
OLE 2.0 is the next stop on the road to "Chicago" and "Cairo," providing
for tight integration between applications and these operating systems. It
also enables today's applications to have a look and feel consistent with
the user interfaces of "Chicago" and "Cairo." OLE 2.0 opens the path to a
new model of computing in which the user's document is at center stage,
rather than the tools and applications used to produce that document. It
also leads us into the future of Windows-based objects and a new world of
component software. This world of component software can open up new
markets and provide you with opportunities to publish objects and create
turn key solutions from off-the-shelf parts.
Nuts and bolts sessions on OLE 2.0 will take you from concept to
implementation. We will show you how to use OLE compound files as your
native storage format. You will see how to incorporate Visual Editing into
your applications and how to take advantage of OLE automation. Supporting
uniform data transfer with objects, or drag and drop, will also be
covered. We will also provide details on implementing OLE 2.0
functionality in your applications by using Microsoft's Foundation Class
Libraries. Finally, we will discuss the enhancements to the object model
and the technology that will allow OLE 2.0 objects to be distributed and
managed across networks transparently.
3. Plug and Play Framework
One of the obstacles to the greater adoption of PC technology is the
difficulty in setting up and configuring PC's and additional peripheral
devices. During the conference, you'll learn how the Plug and Play
framework is designed to address this issue by improving the automatic
detection and configuration of devices by the operating system. We believe
this will enable you to reach customers who have put off purchasing a PC,
or upgrading their systems due to these daunting technical issues. You
will also learn about new systems messages and device driver enhancements
which make your application or device driver Plug and Play enabled. With
these improvements, installing your devices and device drivers will become
easy for users.
4. Device Drivers
The conference will also feature extensive device driver coverage. You'll
learn details for implementing 32-bit protect mode virtual device drivers
(VxD's) for "Chicago." You will also discover how you can leverage your
Windows NT device driver work. Breakout sessions will focus on display
drivers, improved communication and modem device drivers, as well as
enhanced input and printer device drivers.
5. Internationalizing Applications
As Windows has achieved dramatic success in markets around the world,
shipping Windows-based applications worldwide makes good business sense.
You'll find out about current and new design elements in Microsoft Windows
that facilitate writing code for all markets -- not just for Europe, but
also the Far East and Middle East. We will present Microsoft's systems
strategy for addressing worldwide markets, and the technologies needed to
deliver applications worldwide. Breakout sessions will focus on character
encoding systems and international-specific APIs. And you'll learn how the
Windows programming interface helps applications work around special
hardware and user requirements in certain markets. You'll also have the
opportunity to share ideas with key Microsoft developers who are preparing
software to be simultaneously shipped in multiple languages.
These topics and many others will be covered thoroughly during the
conference. The knowledge you'll gain will enable you to create better
Windows-based applications. You will also receive the Microsoft Win32
Professional Development Kit for "Chicago" which will enable you to get a
jump on early development for "Chicago."
Before the general sessions begin, three complimentary implementation
workshops will be offered on Monday afternoon to get you ready for the rest
of the week.
The Technical Introduction to OLE 2.0 will enable you to come up to speed on
OLE development issues. This workshop will set the programming framework for
the later conference sessions that will go into many implementation level
details on OLE 2.0 technology.
Multimedia: A Developer Fast Track will cover development issues that will
impact you as you tap into the high growth multimedia market. You'll learn
the process from storyboard development through media creation, including
audio, video graphics and animation. In addition to important technical
information and development ideas, you will receive a CD-ROM packed with
code, tools, clip art, and resource listings. Plus, you will get a special
version of Microsoft Viewer which will enable you to start creating those
multimedia applications right away.
A Programmer's Tutorial on C++ and Microsoft Foundation Class Library
Architecture Tutorial features two sessions. The Programmer's Tutorial on
C++ teaches C programmers the fundamentals of C++. It covers the basic
concepts of object-oriented programming and design, and the major concepts of
C++ programming. It will help bring developers up to speed on the easiest
way to build Win32 applications. In the Microsoft Foundation Class Library
Tutorial we will describe and demonstrate the architecture and components of
the Microsoft Foundation Classes and discuss the role it plays in the future
of 16- and 32-bit Windows-based application development. If you are not
familiar with MFC, you should attend this workshop as other conference
sessions will build on the materials covered in this session.
The final day of the conference is not to be missed. Dr. Richard Rashid,
Director of Research for Microsoft, will present his vision for the digital
future. Dr. Rashid directed the Mach operating system project while at
Carnegie Mellon University and is now heading up research for Microsoft's
Advanced Technology division, which focuses on development of future
Microsoft technologies.
We have a limited number of spaces at this event and they are likely to fill
up fast. Call (800)233-1729. *Keep in mind that this conference requires
that you have a signed non-disclosure agreement to attend.* You won't want to
miss this unique opportunity to get an in-depth look into the world of 32-bit
Windows-based computing and firsthand insights into Microsoft's newest
versions of the Windows operating system. Nor should you pass up the chance
to be among the first to get the Microsoft Win32 Professional Development Kit
for "Chicago."
