Task Manager as usual under-reporting and not reporting, the usual lying MS
weasel prog.
OK, killed that update process, machine responsive again.
Hours later, new updates available! Halleluja.
I say yes and it starts storing that dl on a *removable USB drive*.
How braindead is it possible to be?
Anyways, now it's installing, and it's accessing my empty *floppy drive*. That
drive makes a very audible sound when it's accessed.
WTF.
- Alf (annoied)
After installing immediately popped up yet another update available, and same
shit happens. I took me a minute to write the "i" in "shit". The update process
really weaks havoc with everything in sight, including not only making Windows
trash but it messes about with window activation, removable media drives and
whatnot.
I once, years ago, waited 6.5 hours for Windows Installer to copy files to a
directory, which I could have done in 20 secs if allowed to do it manually.
Same story umpteen times on umpteen different machines, MS update and installer
really really really sucks (2 minutes on writing that last "really", and the
fucking update process changing window activation willy nilly sending me away
from this one, repeatedly).
And it's not just those two progs, e.g. the Start menu accessing the hard disk
for every mouse event, the Explorer right click menu scanning the whole
registry, netstat artificially lobotimized (try netstat -a -b), openfiles
broken, etc. etc., even, a seconds delay for the volume control's right clicke
menu, and it should all be *instant* instead of seconds and minutes and half
hour, same functionally *was* fairly instant early in the 90's.
Why the f*ck can't Microsoft hire someone who isn't so severely intellectually
challenged as their current monkey developers?

Agreed, I've never experienced the symptoms described by Alf either
(WinXP); Windows Update is permanently enabled here and I'm not really
aware of it. I wonder if his issue is an unfortunate interaction with
a virus scanner, or some memory-hungry process(es) running which are
resulting in a lot of swapping to disk.
The trouble is, Alf is unlikely to solve the problem whilst he blames
Microsoft's 'stupidity' rather than actually investigating the cause.

To reply by email change 'news' to my forename.
Well, the darned update process, "wuau..." something, started again, machine
slowed to a crawling handicapped snail's pace.
Or actually, I noticed machine almost stopping, checked processes, and there the
ugly monstrosity was, pretending to have just a little working set but huge
allocation of virtual memory: why are you so hairy and have such long teeth,
grandma?
I turned off automatic updates in Security Center, killed the wuau.., and
stopped the update service,
C:\Documents and Settings\Alf> sc stop wuauserv
SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 3 STOP_PENDING
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x1
WAIT_HINT : 0x7530
C:\Documents and Settings\Alf> sc GetDisplayName wuauserv
[SC] GetServiceDisplayName SUCCESS Name = Automatic Updates
C:\Documents and Settings\Alf> sc stop wuauserv
[SC] ControlService FAILED 1062:
The service has not been started.
C:\Documents and Settings\Alf> _
and lo and behold! :-), machine again usable. :D :D :D
Problem identified and terminated. Or at least /one/ of them. Now all I have to
do is to remember to do manual updates...
Cheers,
- Alf
The automatic update is rude and inconsiderate.
Yeah, I was p**sed. Still am, for that matter. I believe in speaking one's mind. :-)
