sorry about the cross posting, but I really want an answer, and these are
all related groups to the question.

when are 3dfx going to release dx8 compatible voodoo 3 drivers?
This puts a complete halt on development for me until they produce drivers!

Anybody know? rougthly?

Why does this hamper you? I have a voodoo3 3000 and I'm developing for DX8
with no problems.

And I wouldn't hold my breath too much anyway, sadly the Voodoo3 is getting
reasonably old now... And there's actually no real point in having DX8
drivers as the new capabilities are not supported by the V3 anyway

1.06 drivers was the problem, 1.05 fixed it

yeah, but the cube map demo shouldn't revert to REF software driver, It had
these capabilaties in DX 7, so they should implement it on the DX 8 Drivers,
I think they will produce DX 8 Drivers as 3dfx are good like that (or so
I've heard). On their site they say that there are compliant cards (all the
DX 8 features in hardware) and cards with compatible drivers (provide all
the features, but some by emulation). I think they'll make compatible
Drivers for the Voodoo 3.

They probably will make compatable dx8 drivers at some point, but don't hold
your breath waiting for them.. it took them 6 months to get drivers out for
win2k, and they only support banshee and voodoo 3/4/5, not voodoo 2.. the
banshee ones never came out of beta...
Dx7 drivers for the first 6 months of release had lots of problems as well
(can you say hard machine lock up while using notepad!), so be wary of using
the first version of any dx8 driver that they release.
3dfx is going downhill really.. they have even decided to stop making video
cards and concentrate on making chips only to sell to other manufacturers.

First time I've heard of a Voodoo3 doing cube map... AFAIK, only the NVidia
GF1 and GF2 and the ATI Radeon have support for D3D Cube map. You must be
mistaken with spherical map (that the V3 does very well because it's done by
the D3D runtime and not the driver :)

As regarding the quotes on their sites, it's more likely to be PR parp than
anything else. Sure, their next gen card will be DX8 compliant... and sure
they can support "compatible" drivers, for the vertex shaders for example,
as once again it is handled by the D3D runtime in their case (no HW TnL).

And it's the firt time that I hear someone saying that 3dfx are actually
good at producing DX drivers... Naaa, that must be a joe ;-)

Today, they officially announced that they will no longer make cards or
chips. They will only license core technology to other manufacturers.

I just tried my VooDoo 3 and the env-cube mapping doesn't work on either Dx7
or Dx8. I don't think it's supposed to have these caps anyway.

I thought it was the other way around... they used to make chips and now
they make cards,
monster 3d cards were voodoo 2, and voodoo 3/4/5 is their own since they
teamed
with STB.

I did run, and didn't seem to be _completely_ in software, although some
must be if it doesn't support this in hardware, and the frame rate was
reassonable which makes me think some h/w accelleration was being used.

DX8 support for V3 isn't yet available. Go to 3dfx website and you'll notice
that only V4+V5 drivers have been updated.

Use voodoo 4/5 v.1.04.00 , it´s compactible voodoo 3000 and 2000 , work just
fine with dx80.

No, they only decided to outsource card manufacturing. They'll simply get
some other company to produce their card's for them but these will still be
3DFX cards.
I also read an interview with some 3DFX guy who stated that they will only
license their technology (meaning Voodoo 3, not 4/5) to asia, not to europe
or the US. Don't they ever learn anything....

yes, on the 29th.

> Downloadsite is down for days... great 3dfx support.

It's not down, just very slow.. just been on it, perhaps people who
installed DX8 realised they needed the drivers and that's stressing the
server out (people seem to go to 3dfx.com rather than 3dfxgamers.com where
the drivers are located). 3dfxgamers.com is working at a good-ish speed. go
straight there. And you can't blame them for server load,
or having customers..... ;-)

- Anthony

PS: I started a download okay, but it never finished cos i stopped it (I've
already got the drivers)
It all seems fine.
