how to program in windows?

As you could guess from the question, i am totally new here. My question
is the following. I want to program a windows application for controlling
slide-projections. There is software on the market for this, but i want
to experience the joy of writing the source myself, an also have the
flexibility of designing to our own needs.
Is there a not too difficult, versatile programming language. It should
be able to adress all the pins of the centronics port, because that's the
port we'll be using.
