Many people have posted some interesting information about what they
claim is Build 999, Nashville and even Windows96. It has been pretty
much established that there will be NO Windows96. Others have posted
other information, such as "I installed it, hated it and deleted it."
This information is useless, as well. It is no longer a coincidence
that EACH AND EVERY person who claims to have obtained Nashville/Build
999 doesn't seem to know how to help others obtain it. They either
say its on some newsgroup that doesn't exist, or at some web or FTP
site that likewise doesn't exist. They also, of course, claim to have
deleted their copy and thus cannot mail it out to anyone.
The fact of the matter is that the black copy of Build 999 that
circulated on the Internet was around for a total of 2 days. A log of
the servers that had it showed that only 42 people downloaded it.
Since then, people have claimed to have found it everywhere (kinda
like Elvis sightings).
Forgive my rantings, but my goal is to get people to stop claiming
they have something when clearly they do not. In other words, it is
put up or shut up time. If you have Nashville/Build 999, then talk
about it and share it. If not, then stop claiming you do. You know
who you are, so I won't name names, unless, that is, the activity
resumes.

MS will release another service pack or something instead, I guess it
could be called Win96 but that's not how MS is going to market it.

Maybe those boasting about it don't have good & legal copies and are
paranoid of getting busted.

Well, it's been in alt.bin.warez for a darn long time, even now people
are reposting missing bits for others to snag. I guess you are
talking about ftp servers, that maybe the case, I do not know.

The problem is, in my understanding, that to have a good & legal copy
of, for arguements sake, Windows 4.10.999 you would probably have to
sign an agreement with MS that says you're not allowed to disclose any
info about it.
I have seen it, I know where I can go and use it, it is pretty stable,
I've seen Incat's Easy CD Pro 95 v1.0 run on it and successfully cut
CD-R's, the automatic high-lighting feature is a royal pain in my
opinion, hope it can be switched off like in X-Windows.
I don't believe it contains the 32bit VFAT system, which I think
should have been included in 95 from day one.
But such is life.

Scott,
"Nashville" is still being posted to the alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc
newsgroups as wee speak. It has been posted thousands of times over the past
few months and will continue to be posted for some time.
I downloaded it and found it to be much faster than 95.
Unfortunately, it also had some compatibility problems with my hardware. I'm
not going to say if I still have it, but I can tell you that anyone who has
isn't going to be very likely to brag about it since it is obvious that M$FT
is watching these threads (they admit to it). I can tell you that it is 19
disks long and measures about 30 meg in size.
If you guys want it, goto the binaries group and get it. Your
statement about 42 downloads is based on the belief that you knew every site
on the planet that it was on. The fact that the newsgroups have it shows that
it has been on thousands of servers worldwide. Most people downloaded it from
the newsgroups because there are no tracable logs left to track you down.
Stop arguing, take your head out of the sand and simply do a header
list of the warez groups on any given day. You'll find it with no trouble.
My Build of Nashiville is running just fine (sort of..)

There are a lot of chancers on the net.

Do you honestly believe that ANYONE who has a real copy of Nashville
will actually stand up and say "yes" ? That would be like shooting
oneself in the foot.
What do you think M$ will do if one owns up to having a pirate copy?
Sorry, but I don't think that you will find anyone coming forward in a
hurry.
AFAIR , Nashville was an internal beta that was "leaked" onto the net
and then promptly withdrawn by M$.
** IF ** you have the right connections, then it IS possible to get a
copy of Nashville.

Doubtful that MS would have any resource whatsoever against ANYONE who
claims to have a copy of Nashville.
Putting aside the insurmountable task of proving and prosecuting
anyone, does anyone, including MS, believe even half the stuff posted
in USENET?

Anyone who says that obviously never had it. There is nothing about it to

Not really. It was readily (well, in bits and pieces) available on
alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc. I don't know wabotu other sources, but in that
newsgroup it was posted and reposted for several weeks if not longer and even
from an unstable server at 28.8K it could be d/l. Off course no one is gonna
offer 38 Megs (if memory serves right) via email or put it in their home
directory, though I'm sure there are underground sites out ther with it on it.

Well, let's see, the key features seem to be the 'focus' that follows the
mouse. Ie. you dont' need to click on something to highlight it in a file
list. Coupled with this is the option to turn on single clicking, a MUCH
needed improvement to the OS. Other than that a few setup menus are moved
around, there is some Athena thing (which I haven't tried since I don't want
to install Exchange which it requires), and oh yeah, some better, smoother
pop-up windows. As far as stability, well it seems to be very stable, just
like Win95, maybe even more so.

Ok I saw it and DID NOT WANT IT..
By the time it was posted it was already OLD (for a beta)
Who would want Unsupported ßeta software for their important

I have ßeta Tested for a Number of years and even with Support

I guess you don't hang out in news:alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc
It has been posted there a couple of times. I have it and use
itwithout any trouble. The version is 4.10.999, the files are
dated 11-28-96 and when you boot to DOS and type "ver" it
responds with "Nashville 4.10.999". There are some new features.
One is Athena 1.0. It is a PIM that works in conjunction with MS
Schedule +. I think it was added for looks only because anything
I try to do in it responds with "that feature hasn't been
implemented yet". There are explorer enhancements such as single
click execution of icons and file names, holding the cursor over
a folder will explode it to sub folders without clicking,
explorer options in the form of a drop down menu from other
windows yields "favorites" and "history". Much more support in
the form of "balloon help". Example hold the mouse over the x in
the upper right and a message says "close current window". Also
the mouse focuses on whatever it's on similar to Xmouse that
comes with powertoys.
You know, just because you don't have it doesn't mean it doesn't
exist. It's 38meg big and not something people share on a whim
(especially if you pay connect charges or dial a tool call for
access) and some people's mailboxes wont hold 38meg.
If someone has a specific question about it email me privately.
I don't know why it was released or for whom it was intended but
I hope MS implements some of the features to the next service
pack for 95 and for Windows NT 4.0.
