DirectX 5 will be more that a games API, it adds multimedia support
making it a QuickTime competitor. It also includes support for the Win32
Driver Model, and the USB and FireWire driver stacks. It is now in beta,
with release expected in June. I predict Windows 95 OEM SR3 will follow
in July.
Here's a quote from the TechWeb article (one of the best)

DirectX 5.0 also incorporates support for the emerging USB and 1394
buses, as well as support for the Accelerated Graphics Port, Intel's MMX
multimedia extensions and Microsoft's Talisman graphics architecture.
The Microsoft press release also mentions multiple display support.

Here's a more recent article refuting part of this:

There won't be any more USB drivers before Memphis is released early 98.
This is bad news for USB hardware developers, who got very little USB
support in OSR 2.1 last October. Toshiba had to develop their own class
driver to support the USB on their desktop system.
The announcement of NetPCs, available later this year, makes little
sense. They have no ISA slots, relying on USB or FireWire for expansion.
I guess you're stuck with whatever they put on the mainboard.
