You should note before installing this build that the daily builds are
not stabilized nor rigorously tested prior to release. You may find
key features are not functional in this build. We will document
significant issues we are aware of in the release notes and on our
Known Issues Web page.
This is not Beta 3, despite what the setup splash screens and logo
bitmaps may say. This is just a weekly internal build that we have
decided to release for limited external testing. At some point, as we
approach beta 3, we have to check in these changes to our source code
tree, and test them, along with other features & bug fixes. We are
still a while away from our Memphis Beta 3 release, but we have
switched the bitmaps and setup text files. We will clearly let you
know when we reach Beta 3, and will send a CD out to all beta test
sites.
Known Issues with this Build
As with any interim build there are known issues with this build that
we would like to bring to your attention. First off we have been
receiving quite a bit of feedback about the following issues:
· Setup failure installing Java
· Discover Win98is not working ( It isn't installed yet, so the
welcome screen calls it and can't find it.)
· Right after Setup reached 100% and before the reboot you may get an
error dialog: SU992010: "unknown error, try running setup again and if
that fails, try running it from DOS". Please reboot and let Setup
continue.
· During the "Updating system settings" section of Setup you may
receive "Unable to install Java packages from
c:\windows\system\dajava.cab. Unknown HRESULT: (800b01obh)." This can
be safely ignored with no ill effects.
· Unable to create Emergency boot disk during setup. EBD creation
fails at 60% with "Unable to initialize disk". User should cancel EDB
creation and create one later via the control panel. Please refrain
from sending in reports on these issues. The first two issues should
not be considered as failures in terms of setup when you fill out your
installation survey.
The remaining known issues for this release are as follows:
Broadcast PC
· Support for satellite receiver cards has been removed. This support
will be added at a later time.
· The new Help Button on the channel bar is screwed up on upgrades.
To
work around the problem, delete or rename "c:\program files\tv
viewer\icons\helpg.bmp"

Multimedia Sound Issues:
If Windows 98 has a WDM audio driver available for your sound card it
is now installed by default.
This may contribute to one or more of the following issues with this
build:
· AVI, MPG, and AU may files hang or time out when played with
DirectShow. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL will bring up the task list and
allow you to close the player that has stopped responding.
· You may hear occasional beep sounds from your speakers. This is a
known issue and should not cause any problems.
· Your system may hang when system sounds events, such as accessing
the start menu, are played. If you experience this please try
disabling your sound scheme from Control Panel, Sounds.
· The volume control may reset the volume levels to a minimum with
each reboot.
· On some sound cards the mute check boxes are grayed out and
unavailable.
· The volume control may have duplicate entries for items such as
Synthesizer (MIDI), Wave and CD Audio.
· MIDI files appear to play but no sound is heard through the
speakers.
· Applications and Games which use DirectSound may have sound related
problems.
