Hello there,

I upgraded to winXP prof. version copy 2505 and my network collapsed :-( .
My second computer has windows ME and Netgear 311. I made the network
disabled all firewalls, followed Steve Winograd directions and managed to
ping from both computers but still could not get to share files and
printers. Seems I could access the internet from the network
computer(Windows ME) but after I restart the same commuter in some of the
times I would lose that same internet connection. Could you post some
directions how to make this network to function.
Thank you all.
Ross

This info is good for Windows 2000 Pro, and should apply also to Windows XP.
I'm guessing that you are using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), and not a
router, because you mention the ME computer losing it's address. If I'm
wrong, then please dis-regard the following...

First, if you upgraded from a Windows 9x operating system, you need check
your driver versions to make sure they are Windows NT (Win2k/XP versions).
If not, then you'll probably need to upgrade them.

Now that all of the hardware checks out, you need to check that a user
account exists on the XP machine for whatever username and password (not the
machine name) you use to login to the ME machine. Being an NT based system,
Windows XP requires that a user account exists for anyone trying to access
the network. *See help on creating users and groups*

If this doesn't remedy the situation, then...

On the XP box, check that sharing is enabled on the adapter for your
internet connection by viewing it's property sheet. Next, on the property
sheet for the local network adapter, make sure that the TCP/IP settings show
an address of 192.168.0.1, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Now check the
TCP/IP settings for the adapter on the ME machine, and make sure it is set
to get it's IP address dynamically.

After checking this, shut-down EVERYTHING, including the hub if you are
using one. Many hubs, routers, and switches will retain mac addresses and/or
other network settings; and will need to be cold-booted if cards or OSes
change. Plug the hub back in first, then start the XP machine. When the XP
machine has fully started, then start the ME system.

If this does not work, then as a last resort you may try completely
re-installing the network on the XP box (this includes the adapter cards
themselves, as well as ICS).

Thank you E2001

I did your recommendations but other problem I see now and I think that may
solve my network problems. My window ME computer appears as a type windows
95 workstation. Isn't this wrong?

No, that's right. Windows ME is the latest (and hopefully the last) in the
windows 9x line of operating systems, starting with Windows 95. Your network
should recognize any Windows 9x version the same way.
