Can't get all drives to work right

I'm using the final build of Windows 98 and I can't seem to get it to assign
drive letters to all my drives. Hard drives are fine but my two Cd-Rom
drives and Zip drive won't all work together. I have a 24x pioneer CD-ROM, a
Ricoh CD-RW and an Iomega Zip Drive. Windows 98 lists all three of these in
device manager but the only one with a drive letter assigned to it is the
Ricoh drive. I have tried to select drive letters for the other drives but
they only let me select "I:" which is the drive letter assigned to the
Ricoh. If I screw around with disabling and enabling the drives I can get it
to switch the zip drive to I: but then the other two drives don't work.
There are no errors or conflicts listed in device manager. This setup worked
fine under Windows 95, all I had to do was just switch the drives to the
letters I wanted them to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It must
be something simple I am over looking.

Thanks in advance,

Well, I'm only using the Win98 beta 3 (build 1650) I got off of the
Resource Kit CD and had a problem assigning drives higher than E:.
The resource kit says that the lastdrive parameter in the registry
defaults to Z: but this doesn't seem to be the case on my system.
Because of this, I couldn't assign higher drive letters! Gee, this
wasn't a problem with Win95.

What I did was to edit my config.sys file and stick in the line:

LASTDRIVE=Z:

My guess is that your system allows you to select the drive letter
assigned to your Ricoh because it's hard-coded this way and Win98
recognizes, maybe, drives A: through E: and I:. Try adding the
lastdrive parameter, above, to the beginning of your config.sys file
(or you could add "SET LASTDRIVE=Z:" to your autoexec.bat file),
reboot and cross your fingers! Well, hope this helps!

Why am I running an old beta? Simple, I'm not a developer or beta
tester and I don't believe new builds are legally available otherwise.
Also, I switched to Win98 beta because I couldn't get my brand-spankin
new USR Courier V.Everything v.90 ext. modem to work well with Win95.
There were no errors during installation and everything seemed to work
OK but when I did any significant transfers, I would get maybe 30k
then it would totally stop! It looks like a handshaking problem but
couldn't find any way to fix it. Heck, my old '486 with a 28.8 was
faster than my P200 with 56.6!

In an effort to find the problem, I tried everything from the latest
drivers from 3Com, flashed in a new motherboard BIOS, flashed in the
latest v.90 revision, tried an old ISA 16550 serial card I had laying
around, and even tried a fresh Win95 install but always the same
transfer problem. I still say it's a driver problem since the
V.Everything works fine with Win98's built-in driver. Oh well, just
another one of those OS mysteries I guess.

Did you install the modem .INF file (MODEMCRV90.INF) that
came with the flash rom upgrade? USR Courier V.Everything needs
that file and not the Windows internal .inf file.
