I just download win98, and the version number is
79469-XXX-XXXXXXX-10049
Can anyone tell me what version of this win98?

What you have there is the product ID number, not the version number, the
latter of which should be something like 4.10.xxxx where xxxx is your build
number. You should find this the same place you got the Product ID, i.e.,
by using the System component of the Control Panel.

Well if youre running the build now your newsreader (build 3110) shows youve
got the latest versino of OE, so you've got a fairly recent build/

If in SYSTEM PROPERTIES you haven't got Windows 98 4.10.1998 then you
haven't got the RTM version, which is what you want ! (less bugs/problems
etc. - if any!)

Yes,
RC5 onwards shows 1998, and I dont think theres anyway to tell....

To be safe Id try to find a retail/OEM to install to be sure of having the
final product with the most bug fixes.
