==== POWER TOYS DESCRIPTIONS === IF YOU LIKE LETTING OTHER PEOPLE
RUN YOUR LIFE go ahead and press that cute little button with the house on
it... but if
you're like the Windows95 Shell Development Team, you've got to have things your
way, and it better be right now. For these guys, there can never be enough
shortcuts
for getting stuff done. They've come in late at night, night after night,
when everyone
else is sound asleep -- real programmers don't sleep -- and put together a
set of tools:
the PowerToys. They wrote 'em. We like 'em. We think you will, too. So if
you're a
Windows95 power-user, go ahead and try them out... but don't go crying to
our Help
Center if you get confused: there's no lifeguard on duty, so you're swimming
at your
own risk. Don't get us wrong -- they all do what they should -- but they are
not part of
Windows 95, and are not supported by Microsoft. So that's the story.

10. M$ PowerToys for win95 Installation
Installing the PowerToys
======================== 1.Create a folder for the PowerToys. Right-click
on the
desktop and choose New:Folder from the pop-up menu. Name the folder
"Power". 2.
Download the PowerToys. Click the link on the PowerToy page to download the file
"PowerToy.exe". Save it in the Power folder you just created. 3.
De-compress the file
"PowerToy.exe". Open the Power folder and double-click the file
"PowerToy.EXE". This
will create several new files in your Power folder. 4. Install the
PowerToys. Find the
new Setup Information files ("INF" files -- they look like notepads with a
little yellow gear
on each). Right-click each one (one for each PowerToy), then choose Install.
Uninstalling the PowerToys
========================== 1. Open the control panel. On the Start Menu,
choose Settings->Control Panel. 2. Open "Add/Remove Programs". Find the
Control
Panel called Add/Remove Programs and double-click it. 3. Remove PowerToys.
Select
the PowerToy you want to uninstall on the list, then click the button marked
"Add/Remove".

11 Harddrive Performance and 32-bit mode (win95)?
Since installing win95, I've noticed decreased performance.
If your motherboard's bios supported Block Mode or 32-bit disk access, turn
it off.It
seems to conflict with either your hard drive controller or Windows 95
itself. I was also
on the phone with Microsoft, until they finally gave up. I decided to turn
off those two
items, plus LBA mode, and everything is now at 32 bit disk access... No
problems... I
hope that work for ya.------ Zubin

12. Changing the cd-rom drive letter in win95?
Control Panel\System\Device Manager\CD-ROM\Properties\Settings....---chris@

13. Bilingual keyboard settings?
We have lots of bilingual keyboards called TBITS-5 keyboards. In order to
work under
DOS, you have to set the codepage to 850. Is there a facility to do that under
Windows95? You need to add the following two lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\windows\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
mode con codepage select=850 ---Christian

14. Here's how to configure the speak.exe sound driver for
Windows95.
1: Get the speaker driver at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/speak.exe 2: Run
speak.exe to decompress it and make speaker.drv 3: Copy speaker.drv to
\Windows\System 4: Add to SYSTEM.INI Under the drivers section, add a line that
says Wave=speaker.drv And add a new section just like this
[speaker.drv]
CPU Speed=32
Volume=1000
Version=774
Enhanced=1
Max seconds=0
Leave interrupts enabled=0
5: Save SYSTEM.INI. 6: Reboot/restart 7: Start Control Panel. Make sure no other
programs are running. 8: Open Multimedia 9: Click on the "Advanced" Tab
10: Double
click on Audio Devices, to open up Audio for Sound Driver for PC-Speaker
11: Click on
Audio for Sound Driver for PC-Speaker 12: Click on Properties. 13: Click on
Settings
14: You're now at the change speaker settings dialog box from Windows 3.1.
Click on
Default. 15: Adjust volume, Limit, & Enable interupts to you hearts delight.
I hope this
proves helpful. (again :-) Mark

15. PC ANYWHERE
I am running PCAnywhere on Win95 at home and on Win3.1 at work. It work very
well... no problems at all but for the black screen thing, there is a patch
available for
version 2.0 only.
ftp.symantec.com
in directory /public/windows/pca: 20UP_A.EXE (777K 05/04/95): Update file
for PCA
2.0 This file updates you to the latest revision of PCA 2.0 for
Windows, and
includes complete support for WIN95. ---,pauls, jharris@

6. COMMUNICATIONS: modems, networking issues,
Micro$oft Network (MSN), MS-EXCHANGE, MS-FAX

1. Automated script function for Internet (dial-up adapter)?
Will there be an automated script function for dial-up adpater? Not sure but
there's a
simple freeware scriptor called RoboDUN at
ftp.southwind.net//users/l/leeb/rdun61.zip.
2. MSN access troubleshooting?
6.2.(a) I get a carrier tone to MSN and then it disconnects? If this is
your first time, MSN
is looking for special file which is incorrectly named on the hard drive.
\My Computer
\Program Files \Microsoft Network\VIEW\Options \click 'Show All Files' (also
make sure
'Hide All Files in Registry' is not checked) \CLOSE RENAME 800950.dat to
800950.da_
6.2(a).1 After renaming the above file, I am still unable to connect to MSN
... I had the
same problem for awhile. I called Microsoft and they had me turn off the error
correction; works fine now.
6.2(a).2 This is in the FAQ now. Remove MSN thru the Control Panel, then
reinstall.
Next rename the file. I know this doesn't make any sense, but I've noticed
with win95 ...
try reinstalling it and it works more than half the time. I've even had
something working
right then all of the sudden it doesn't work. Go thru reinstall and it
works again. Bad
quirk. but hey it's a beta release right?

http://walden.mo.net/~rymabry/win95.txt
6.2(b) After downloading a file from MSN the file is deleted from my
disk. If you are
refering to text or documents, yes they are deleted. Notice that when you
first view the
file on line the path is 'WINDOWS\TEMP\FILENAME'. If you want to keep the
file select
'Save as'and choose a new path.
3. Remove the NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD icon from desktop?
I'm not in a shared workgroup environment. How can I remove the NETWORK
NEIGHBORHOOD from my desktop? This is for stand alone computers, networked with
SLIP or PPP, only! \ --Install and Run the System Policy Editor.(Its under
admin\apptools\poledit.) \ --Select File|Open Registry \ --Double-click on
'Local User'
Navigate the tree as follows: Local User Shell Restrictions \ Under the shell
restrictions, set 'Hide Network Neighborhood' so that it has a checkmark.
\ --Click OK
--File|Save the registry.
4. Stop MS-EXCHANGE from sending *.rtf binary attachments?
In MS-EXCHANGE, push the button marked "Reply to All", instead of "Reply" and it
MS-E uses the default settings in your address book. Verify the Properties
setting by:
Double click on the address in the TO: box of the reply. The Properties box
should have
a check box for rtf formatting. Make sure it is not checked.
How do I leave it off as the default? Try Tools-> Services ->Internet profile->
Properties__butten->- - - - - - -Messages Format Dialog Box
One more suggestion: use Tools, Customize Toolbar to remove the "Reply to
Sender"
button from your toolbar icons. You can still do it through Compose menu,
or just
CTRL-R, but removing it from the toolbar will definitely remind you to use
"Reply to All"
which won't send RTF instead of "Reply to Sender" which will. Just a
thought...Xiaphis
RTF: specifies character sets and format of outgoing messages and unless you
explicitely turn of rtf formatting in your outgoing messages, MS-ECHANGE
messages
are sent in two chunks: the plain text of the message, and the message MIME
encoded
in a file called WINMAIL.DAT (i think) attached to the message. WINMAIL.DAT
contains
the original message withhe colors, formatting and fonts used.

5. Signature File for MS-EXCHANGE?
Three ways to add a signature (make a sig file):
(.5.1) Place your Signature file in the Exchange directory (folder). When
you finish an
e-mail message, click on Insert/file - the first time in a session you will
need to navigate
to the Exchange folder in the dialog box that comes up and then - click on
your sig.file
and make sure the Text only raised button is darkened in the lower left hand
side.
Press ok -- there is your sig.
(.5.2) I think it's easier to create a sig file "message"and save it in an
Exchange folder.
Then when you want to include it in a new message, ust open the sig file
"message,"
Edit/Copy it, return to new message, then paste it where you want it to
appear.Two
ways to add a sig is to make a sig file.
(.5.3)There's another way. Get MailSig 1.7. MailSig adds a
"Signature"entry to the
Insert menu and even includes random taglines. --- MSgt Rocky
Try CICA site or one of its mirrors.

6. Modem String Initialization? Modem Statistics?
I need to 'massage' my modem initialization strings; does anyone know where
these
are found? The apps I'm interested in are dial-up and MSN. Go into Control
Panel\
Modems \ Select modem \ Click Properties \ click Connections tab, click on the
Advanced button, look at the field, EXTRA and add in the string minus the AT.
OR
Go to startup/run type in regedit; do a search for the string "modem" f3
finds next f3 till
you see the init string edit to your hearts content and save changes. mdodge@
Modem Statistics
Look in:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services|Class\Modem\nnnn\
(Don't go into "init").
Near the bottom is a "Reset" key. Mine says "AT&F<cr>"
My understanding is that Win95 sends this reset command whenever it hangs
up, which
is actually pretty handy. You could just try clearing it so that there is no
command in the
box. I have changed registry entries for my modem in the past and I wouldn't
worry
about your system crashing, however, Win95 has a sneaky way of fixing
itself, so if
there still is nothing in your modem after disconnect, check to be sure that
the entry has
not been put back in and executed. If it has, let me know, I may still have
one more
trick.
Eureka! You're suggestion was right on the money. I looked at the reset key
value, and
while it said "ATZ<cr>" instead of "AT&F<cr>", I changed it to "AT<cr>"
because, I think,
the modem driver expects an "OK" back. In any case, when I disconnect and
immediately run a terminal emulator that talks directly to the COM port, an
ATI6 returns
the link statistics of the last call. It hasn't changed it yet and I've made
a couple of calls;
it may on restart of Windows. This oughta be in the FAQ (That is if it's
frequently asked
and I'm not the only one who wants this info). BTW, by looking at modemlog.txt,
Windows 95 hangs up by dropping DTR and then sending ATH. It sends an AT&F just
before it dials anything. Thanx for your help. Colin
OR =======
An alternative to the above solution is Control Panel >
-->Modems-->Diagnostics Tab.
Then double click on the com port you desire > the info from then click
"More Info" and it
will give the output from > ATI0 to ATI6. This is an another way to get the
result from
ATI6.-- bob Sorry but you have to set your refresh rates in your
autoexec.bat file (or
manually form the dos prompt). MS didn't think we needed the capability
from within
win95 (TIC).___Alan J.
Unfortunaely, some of the good stuff is truncated on the right, and there's
no horizontal
scroll bar. In any case, without changing the reset key value in the
registry, Windows
95 always sends an ATZ down after any disconnect, resetting the modem, and
wiping
out the last link statistics. Windows 95 modem stuff needs better statistics
than just
connect time and characters sent/received.--- Colin
7. MS-EXCHANGE and MIME ?
Why doesn't MS-EXCHANGE just send MIME encoded binary attachments like
everyone else? We don't know? <shrug> But we can't wait to see what happens
after
August 24th when all those *.rtf attachments are unleashed upon the world. :-)
"MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and is a standard set of
definitions for non-ASCII" (non TEXT only) "email. The MIME standard
specifies a way
to include binary data attachments to Internet e-mail messages and way to encode
binary data into 7bit form using ASCII characters and to convert back at the
other end.
The MIME standard supports word processing documents, PostScript, graphic,
binary
files, video, voice messanges and other message types. MIME allows for
alternative
representations of the same data. For example, there can be an attachment
in text form
followed by one containing bitmap" (graphics) "page images of the same
information."

8. Internet software (program) for win95?
Can someone point me to the right place, please? I'm ready to get a
SLIP/PPP account
and get off of AOL for Internet access. I've read about different packages
people use like
Netscape, Free Agent, Eudora, QVTNET WinVN, WinFTP, etc. I'd like a
definative list to
get started.
Wow! Will you get differences of opinion on this! My choices (today) would be:
I liked Jim's win3.x choices but here our few more to consider for win95 and
where to find
them on the InterNET. The key (as with any software choice) is what do you
want to do
with it and what's your own "tolerance" levels? ;-)
For Newsreader, if you want to minimize hourly connect charges, use FREE AGENT
because it allows you read newsgroups off-line. Both FREE AGENT and WINVN
decode,
binary files (like *.gif graphics) after-downloading. Both are freeware but
Free Agent has
"more features" commerical version for $29. I do like NETSCAPE as a
newsreader and
use it often as such but the other two allow you to customize preferences,
window screens,
etc..
While I consider myself computer literate and a computer professional, I've
shied away
from Exchange as a Mail Reader because I can't even figure out how to send a
message
much less receive one (and on this one, I refuse to RTFM). And, then,
there's the
"attachment" thing.
I use EUDORA and from the beginning it was very "initutive" and easy to use
without the
instructions. Eudora also is freeware with a "More Features' commerical
version for around
$60. We've just purchased the commercial version of FREE AGENT which is
suppose to
have a full feature Mail Reader. If it's half as nice as the
newsreader,I'll probably switch to
Free Agent as my Mail Client as well.
NETSCAPE is great, but its competitors are doing some nice things. My
husband also uses
a 3-D, Virtual Reality Browser called WORLDVIEW.

9. How to set up MS-Exchange to send and receive mail only when
told?
Goto tools from the menu bar and choose services. Internet mail should be
highlighted.
Choose properties. The choose Connections. From here, make sure that the Work
Off-Line and use remote mail is UNCHECKED. Then choose Schedule and set the time
for 0. If you use a dial-up connection, select Connect by Network. This
should a fix it.

10. Sort & Filter mail with MS-Exchange?
If you use the "Remote Mail" function, there is a simplified filtering
available for filtering
the headers, but what I have done in Exchange is to insert the "To" column
as the first
column in my INBOX folder. This basically sorts out personal mail, and each
of the
mailing lists individual mail. I have created individual folders for each
of the main topics
and mailing lists I follow. I then have to manually move the messages from
the INBOX
to the individual folders. I also have separate individual folders under
the main topics
for TO READ and SAVED. So the tree might look like this:
Microsoft Exchange
+--Mail Folder
+--Deleted Items
+--Inbox
+--Outbox
+--Sent Items
+--Storage
+--Win95
| +--To Read
| +--Saved
+--OtherList
+--To Read
+--Saved
etc.
Changing the columns is under VIEW. I readily admit that this is a poor
excuse for
filtering, but it is the best I have been able to come up with in Exchange.
It does make it
easier to cope with the 200 - 400 messages I get every day from the several
mailing
lists I follow. I hope this helps.--- David
7. NETIQUETTE (do's and don'ts of Internet)

1. Using Keywords in the Subject Line?
What are the Capitalized Abbreviations used on mailing list messages and some
USENET messages in the Subject Line? Topic Keyword usage in the subject line
helps the readersort through messages faster (for deletion, 'catchup
thread', saving or
reading). Many automated mailing list servers can sort up to 11 different
topics allowing
users to subscribe only to those messages for a specific topic. The keywords
recommended for the WIN95 'Give and Take' email list forum are:
ADMIN: ------> Adminstrative posting to List Owner or a newsgroup
procedure
BACKUP: ------> backup issues and questions
BUGS; -----> windows95 bugs (errors)
COMM: ----->. communications (modem, Internet, fax)
DESKTOP: -----> comments questions about win95 desktop options
EXCHANGE: -----> Micro$oft Exchange Mail Program
HARDWARE: -------> hardware issues
INSTALL: ------> setup issues and questions
MSN: -------> Micro$oft Network
NET -----> networking related issues
OTHER: -----> General interest or 'FYI'--for your information
WISH: -------> features would like included in win95 or could have been
done better
For groups like WIN95, with different versions (builds) of the same product
all called
win95, it is helpful to readers to specify the verison number (i.e. build
347, build m8, or
preview; build 490 June Test Relase) This also applies to other software
with different
releases such as WordPerfect for WINDOWS version 6.1 (Wpwin6.1)

2. Netiquette (the do's and don't of Internet communciations)
1. Given the multinational nature of the Internet where English
is a second
language for many posters (email writers). If you take offense to the
grammar or
spelling of a message, please take into consideration the poster's origin.
Please do not
insult or flame a person whose grasp of the English language is lacking. They
deserve credit for the effort to post in a foreign language as well as the
knowledge they
have to provide to the group's discussion.
2. Newsgroups are set up to make public any message posted. If
you wish to
make a private comment, you must ensure that you reply to the original author of
the message (the individual email address of the person in the 'From:' header
field) rather than to the newsgroups itself.
3. It is recognized that quoting messages is sometimes important
in order to
preserve context. However, please limit your quoting to that which is
absolutely
necessary to the reply to the thread (Subject) -- and PLEASE delete all
header lines if
your mailer includes them.
4. Discussions that compare competing software such as other rating
systems/shells (such as OS/2 vs Windows 95) are not permitted as a general
rule in
comp.* newsgroups and many mailing list related to computer topics. The
exception are
the comp. * .ADVOCACY groups and alt.* groups. Keep postings relevant to the
newsgroup or email list's stated Topic.
5. Please DO NOT post transcriptions of reviews or articles from
copyrighted publications--even if they relate to a discussion taking place.
You can
always cite the article in question so others can look it up.
6. Please do not post Commercial advertisements or any other
postings not
germane to the subject of the newsgroups.
7. Newsgroups related to the discussion of Micro$oft Windows
products
have 'ms-windows' in their title. Please do not post windows95 discussions
to groups
like comp.windows.news and comp.windows.misc. These are for non Micro$oft
products that use a similar GUI (graphical user interface).
8. Use "smileys" to show emotion or "tone down" wording. Basic
Smileys are
used to make statement since we can't hear voice inflection over email

:-) (SMILE) Writer is joking, smiling (sometimes
Laughing Out
Loud(LOL))
;-) Wink smiley. Writer says, "don't hit me for what I just
said." Writer
just made a cynical or sarcastic remark.
:-( Frowning smiley. Writer did not like that last statement
or is upset
or depressed about something.
:-I Indifferent smiley. Writer "shrugging"
:-0 Yawn smiley. Writer is bored with the conversation
.

9. Limit your total Signature (Tag) lines. Your Signature shouldn't take
up more
lines than the average (short 5- 10 line) post (message). Use hard
returns if
necessary so the number of characters per line doesn't exceed 65-70
characters per line. Many Internet readers do not use software that
automatically adjust the line length to the width of the screen. Were
