Win98 supports multiple monitors using PCI slots only. Since the AGP
standard allows the card in the AGP slot (it doesn't have to be a
video card by the specifications) to directly access and use the main
memory, multiple monitors with multiple AGP slots would be extremely
hard to implement ( even though the AGP spec provides for more than
one AGP slot, not even Intel , its inventor, has figured out how to do
this with todays and the near futures memory and CPU speeds)

I just read about the latest chipset info at www.s3.com, and they have a
Virge AGP chip with support for one monitor, and a Virge GX2 PCI chip
with support for two monitors.
If you want AGP, you are stuck with one monitor (for now). If you have
four PCI slots available, you can use 8 monitors. I suppose 1 AGP and 4
PCI is also possible.

First, a correction, the S3 virge GX2 is a PCI/AGP chip. Too bad the 3D
perfomance is so bad.
I just did a search for GX2 products, but did not find anything but S3
press releases. However the price for the chip is 29$, so I would say you
will be able to buy a dual monitor card with 4MB SGRAM for 100$ shortly.
