WinNT supports *some* atapi cd-roms. The Teac 4x have a buggy beta driver,
(this is what our vendor shipped with our pentiums. After much complaining
they replaced then with Matshita(sp) FX400 4x drives which work fine with
WinNT.
I have a Mitsumi FX400 CD-ROM 4X on my machine and have not been able
to get it to run under Windows NT Server 3.50. Could you let me know if
you are using the ATAPI.SYS driver or mitsumi.sys driver? Also if you
were able to install via supplied setup disks or if you used the
non-SCSI/nonsupported installation.
Thanks

Hi,
I did some testing with Olivetti PCI machines with (upto) 2 HDU on IDE and
(upto) 2 CD-rom on IDE (ATAPI 1.2 CD-roms from Mitsumi and Philips) and then
NT 3.5(1) installation saw those CD-roms without any problem. THE only
problem could be that your cd-rom in not ATAPI 1.2 compliant.

I am using WinNT 3.51 beta (build 944) and used the default WinNT driver.
I setup all of my machines before we got the fx400 drives, so I did it the
hard way.
I remember that 3.5 had problems with atapi cddrives, unless you installed
Service Pack 2.

I installed a REVEAL 4XCD-ROM model CDQ200 (includes IDE/ATAPI
interface card), in a machine running NT 3.5 and used the driver
provided by NT, the installation worked fine. The machine has a P90,
MICRONICS PCI motherboard, INTEL chip set, enhanced PHEONIX BIOS.
I used the onboard secondary IDE with the defaults of the CD drive.
I guess the point is - yes there are CD-ROM drives that function with
the built in driver provided by NT 3.5, and since you have new
machines you should not have any problems either.

I installed a REVEAL 4XCD-ROM w/included IDE/ATAPI interface card in a
machine composed of a Micronics Pentium PCI motherboard, enhanched
Phoenix BIOS (4.04), running NT 3.5 (serv. pack 2), built in cd-atapi
driver and so far there has not been any problems. I used standard
default settings, no customizing or tweeking involved. It sits on the
secondary ISA IDE using interupt 15.
Since you have new machines you also should not have any problems, I
guess.

To install my Sony 55E 2X CDROM, I had to use ATAPI; the Sony support wouldn't
recognize it. NT 3.5 sometimes detects my Sony, sometimes not; the faulty
detection logic should be fixed in 3.51.

Chris,
Check out the NT HCL (harware compatibility list) up on ftp.microsoft.com
/bussys/winnt/winnt-docs/hcl35 (Note the latest NT 3.5 HCL is March'95 and
includes a list of supported ATAPI drives.) BTW, the March'95 HCL may not be
accessible via FTP just yet - I've sent email to our FTP server admin asking
him to upload it but I don't believe it's there yet. Should be in a day or
two...
regards,

The newly released Windows/NT 3.51 has a larger support list for IDE
CD-ROMs, and has a significantly improved ATAPI.SYS. Please consult the
HCL (Hardware Compatability List) for NT 3.51; the upgrade from NT 3.5
Workstation to NT 3.51 Workstation is around $20.00 (cheap). There are
some specific hardware notes about such CD-ROMs; you have to make sure
that the CD-ROM has recent ATAPI spec. 1.2 conformance. Here's a
sampling of ATAPI 1.2 drives: Aztech CDA 268-031SE, Chinon CDS-5251, Lion
Optics XC-200A/EI, Mitsumi CRMC-FX300, 400, and -FX001, -FXN01DE (only if
firmware rev. >= S02, Philips LMS-CCM207, Sony CDU-55E, -76E, Teac
CD-55E, Toshiba XM-5302B, Wearnes CDD-120. Others listed are
SoundBlaster "faked" IDE.

I've tried to get a Wearnes CDD-120 working on my NT machine without
success. Some things that are not clear; should the CD-ROM be on
the primary IDE controller, as a slave drive, or should it be on
a secondary controller? I've tried both and in each case NT claims
that it could not find a device of that type (IDE CD-ROM).
I can get the CDD-120 working under DOS 6.2 as a slave on a
primary IDE controller, or on a secondary controller, using
the supplied DOS drivers, so it's not a hardware problem.

I am posting this because of the constant questions and problems I see
in this news group regarding ATAPI CD-ROM drives. I want to mention
the particular ATAPI CD-ROM I have current experience with, because it
seems to be smoothly compatible with WIN NT 3.5/3.51, WIN 95, and
W4WG. I have installed this particular drive in all these OS and
diffrent hardware platforms from old to heebie jeebie newest. WIN NT
seems to take to it as if they were related.
I do not usually like to name brands, but I hope this information can
save some people problems. I am in no way connected with this company.
The drive is an internal REVEAL 4XCD-ROM, Model # CDQ200, it includes
"IDE/ATAPI interface card". I paid $200.00 for it.

Ooohhh, you might be in for a bit of fun. I have a new pentium and
even though the drive is SUPPOSEDLY supported by ATAPI, it will not
work. Apparently there is some correlation between the driver and the
pentium processor. I have yet to come up with a solution beyond buying
another CD though.

I've a Sun Moon Star (Sony CD55E) drive which works fine under
windows/dos. I installed Windows NT 3.5.1 from the developer CDROM OK,
with the exception that it does not see the CDROM volume. The diagnostics
panel shows that there is an ATAPI-IDE CDROM device installed as scsi0
something-or-another. This CDROM is connected to my IDE drive card as a
primary. Any help would be appreciated as I want to install MSVC 2.x
next...from CD-ROM, naturally!

Same here, I am a complete newbie to the NT world. I bought a pentium
machine, a copy of NT 3.51, and installed it over DOS and WFW without a
hitch, I have a Mitsumi 4x ATAPI 1.2 CD ROM, and it works flawlessly. I
used it to install NT from the CD, NT recognized it, it works great -
a no-brainer. The Compatibility list thet comes with NT lists many
CD-ROMs, and tells you which driver to choose during installation.
I probably had less problems since all my gear was brand new, late model
stuff, and that I was installing 3.51 from scratch, not upgrading from
older versions.
