Hi,

I've some problems with the 3Com 3C59x Bus Master Adapter Driver in
Win NT 4.
I had to remove this network card and removed the drivers in Network
in Control Panel.
When restarting the PC, the event logger still tells me :
The 3Com 3C59x Bus Master Adapter Driver service failed to start due
to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

When I open the Network settings in Control Panel, the adapter isn't
there anymore.

I've searched in Regedit and there is still there some info about this
card in it. I've tried to remove it, rebooted it and it is still
there.

Any solutions?

Greetings

Eddy,

you've found what I also found, that the 3Com adapters are of
low quality, especially the software. They have no clean
uninstall function, yet they spread pieces of software through
your system folders.

You have to laboriously clean your system after using them.
There seems to be no other way.

I had the fun to use 3Com Token Ring adapters in another
installation, on Windows 95. These things were so terribly
defective that I came close to discarding them. They
clandestinely use large amounts of resources, but don't show
them in the setup. Horrible stuff. I wonder how 3Com can survive
on such garbage.

Finally I asked 3Com support, and they perfectly lived up to my
negative expectations as well. Haven't had any experience as
thoroughly negative as this in a long time with any
manufacturer.

I have stopped using 3Com products for this reason and also
because time and again the stuff didn't work properly in the
first place.

I'm now using Intel Ethernet adapters. They are not exactly high
quality either, but so far they were clearly better here and
have not shown any of the problems I have seen with 3Com
adapters.

Eddy, go to the Control Panel and select the Devices applet. There should
be a specific driver for the 3C59x card listed. Highlight the driver and
then press the STARTUP button. Select DISABLE for the action at startup and
you won't be bothered by the failure event again.

I had this problem in previous service pack of NT 4. Look for an entry in
devices or services for the 3c59x driver and remove or disable that entry
to stop the error message from occurring.
