I was provided with an Exabyte 'Eagle 96' tape drive unit to install
in a Win95 system. The system was altered to use WinNT3.51 W/S.
The WinNT drivers DO NOT include a QIC-3020 driver - the qic-117
drivers, native to WinNT, provide ONLY QIC-40/80 compliance.
Are QIC-3020 drivers available for WinNT3.51??? If so, has anyone
used them with ExaByte Eagle 96 tape drives??

>Hello,
Alan,
HP Colorado have just released a beta QIC-3020 driver for their
HP Colorado Jumbo 1400, which can be picked up from various sources
as appended, including:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_support/hp-colorado/win-nt/ntbeta.exe
This driver works fine with my HP kit -- I don't know whether it would
work with the 'Eagle 96' tape drive however.

WINDOWS NT 3.51 TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR HP COLORADO DRIVES
IDENTIFY TAPE DRIVE:
Jumbo 120, 250, 350, 700, 1400, T1000, PowerDat 6000, Powertape
1100, 2400, or 4000.
IDENTIFY TAPE AND FORMAT
o Jumbo 120 uses QIC-40 format
on a low density tape (DC2000)
on a high density tape (DC2080 or DC2120)
o Jumbo 250 uses QIC-80 format
on a high density tape ONLY (DC2080 or DC2120)
o Jumbo 350 uses QIC-80 format
on a high density tape ONLY (DC2080 or DC2120 or DC2120XL)
o Jumbo 700 uses QIC-3010 format
on a high density tape ONLY (MC3000 or MC3000XL)
o Jumbo 1400 uses QIC-3020 format
on a high density tape ONLY (MC3000 or MC3000XL)
o PowerDat 6000 requires no format
4mm MRS compatible tapes with 90mm or 60mm tape lengths
o Powertape 1100 requires no format
6525 type tapes
o Powertape 2400 requires no format
9120 type tapes
o Powertape 4000 requires no format
9200 type tapes
If a volume containing a non-MTF (Microsoft Tape Format) format
exists on the tape, erase the tape. It is not recommended to
format tapes in the Windows NT Backup Applet. Use a
preformatted tape.
IDENTIFY TAPE DRIVE INTERFACE
Floppy controller (drive connected in place of B: floppy or as
third device)
SCSI adapter card
IDENTIFY MODEL AND BRAND OF COMPUTER, FLOPPY CONTROLLER, SCSI HOST
ADPATER, AND BIOS
Check Compatibility and Accessory Guide or Total Backup Catalog
for any known conflicts with either the computer, floppy
controller or BIOS.
NOTE ANY ERROR CODES
o Tape drive software error:
Note error codes
o Operating system error:
Check for errors in the Event Viewer located in
Administrative Tools.
Highlighting and double-clicking the line in Event
Viewer will display more detailed information.
o No error, computer locked:
Reboot, run CHKDSK, close all other open applications,
and try again.
VERIFY CORRECT INSTALLATION
SOFTWARE:
o Try deleting or removing, reinstalling the driver, and
then
rebooting.
o Close down all open applications.
o Eliminate any software changes to system to determine if
conflict
is related.
o Make sure that the tape decive appears in the installed
devices
box through Windows NT Setup, Add/Remove Tape Devices.
o Make sure the driver for the SCSI card (if used) and the
backup
device appears as STARTED in Devices located in Control
Panel
o QIC117.SYS is the name of the driver for Jumbo and
T1000 drives.
o 4MMDAT.SYS is the name of the driver for the
PowerDAT drive.
o TANDQIC.SYS is the name of the driver for the Powertape drives.
o Verify that the correct tape drive is present and
selected in
the backup applet under Operations, Hardware Setup...
HARDWARE:
o If using a SCSI adapter, try other settings for DMA, IRQ
and I/O,
in a systematic manner.
o Use the Windows NT Diagnostics located in Administrative
Tools to
etermine if there is a resource conflict.
o Try moving the SCSI adapter to a different slot
o Eliminate any hardware changes to system to determine
if
conflict is related.
o Power to the drive.
o Grounded (Screw into the drive bay on either side
with metal
touching metal).
o Cabling is correct -- floppy controller or SCSI
adapter
to tape drive.
o Hint: If the light stays on either the A: or B:
drive,
the cable is not connected from pin 1 to pin 1.
DETERMINE PRESENCE OF PERIPHERAL DEVICES
Systematically remove other cards, devices, etc., to isolate
possible conflict.
OPTIMIZE THE JUMBO TAPE DRIVE FOR BEST PERFORMANCE
RECOGNIZING PERFORMANCE SYMPTOMS:
o Frequent Hard Drive Access, Tape Drive Streaming: Optimum
condition, indicates that the computer is outrunning the
tape drive.
o Constant Hard Drive Access, Tape Drive Starting/Stopping:
Less
than optimum condition, indicates that the computer is
slower than the
tape drive.
o No Hard Drive Access, Tape Drive Stopped: Faulty
condition,
indicates a timing problem or a computer lockup; check
BIOS
and hard drive type for timing problem.
SYSTEM:
o Optimize the hard drive's interleave.
o Defragment files, clear any lost allocation units
(CHKDSK), and
map out any bad sectors (FAT only). Defrag is natively
available for
FAT file systems only. NTFS has no DEFRAG utility and bad
sectors are
mapped automatically.
o Zero Wait State (Check the efficiency of the system before
changing).
o Disable cache and shadow ram.
o Free system of conflicts, particularly DMA conflicts.

AND - John Spackman responded with a message as attached to this
thread in which he kindly pointed me to a beta software package at
"ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_support/hp-colorado/win-nt/ntbeta.exe"
which has been amde available by Hewlett-Packard to cater for the
following tape drives -
o HP Colorado Jumbo 250 (DC2120 Tape)
o HP Colorado Jumbo 350 (DC2120XL Tape)
o HP Colorado Jumbo 700
o HP Colorado Jumbo 1400
o HP Colorado T1000
*******
FOR THE FURTHER INFORMATION OF ALL:
I downloaded the drivers suggested by John from the given HP site but
initially could not get the ExaBYTE Eagle96 tape drive to work. The
problem was, apparently, that I was not correctly loading the driver
in the downloaded software.
After 'cleaning up' a dual-boot arrangement (Win95/WinNT4.0b2) and
starting with a 'fresh' WinNT3.51 system the drivers loaded without
problem and the tape drive is now happily saving 'things' when I tell
it to!!! I >>HAVE NOT<< re-loaded NT4.0b2 onto this system!!
The driver I have successfully used is one for the HP Colorado T1000
Tape Drive. Using the Backup utility native to WinNT3.51, data
transfer is about 4.7MBytes/min and tape capacity is (apparently)
>700MBytes (??) on a MC3000XL tape (400') - nominally 680MBytes.
Using Seagate (Arcada) Backup Exec v6.1 with software compression
option increases data transfer rate to 7.8MBytes/min and I expect that
MC3000 tapes will store of the order of 1000MBytes at that rate!!!
Hardware acceleration is not being used - NT does not support it.
Cheerio, Alan. 1915AEST/6 June 1996
PS: The ExaBYTE WWW site was not of any assistance!!
