I have a important question that I need answered quickly. I have an
opportunity to start a hosting company. I then have the choice to use a NT
or Linux box. I have a dual PIII machine already build, running, that I am
planning on using. I also have NT server 4, licensed. I was looking for some
imput on wheter I should use NT with IIS4 (I know, the security patches!) or
Apache. Also, will IIS 4 do all that I need for a e-mail? What Name server
should I use for NT? Does it have its own? Anything that I am forgeting? I
know that this is a big responsibility, but I have the experience with NT,
just not as setting up a full blown server. I have also worked with IIs 4.0
before.

Please, any info would be appreciated. Please reply to my e-mail.

Thank You,

Donald Tripp

Being a system administrator is a significant responsibility. Is it wise
for someone without significant knowledge, to take on such
responsibilities?

This experience would make me recommend sticking with what you already
know. I think you're aware of some of the security issues, but
understand that the MS solutions are much more vulnerable due to the
underlying infrastructure. Hosting multiple sites isn't hard if you
have individual IPs for each site.

For the best stability and security, I highly recommend going with a
unix solution running Apache. Apache has the ability to run multiple
sites on a single IP and provide the appropriate content based on
hostname used (all the hostnames are aliased the single IP).

Good luck!
