Before installing NTWS 3.5 I was using WFWG 3.11. My comms program is
Procomm Plus for Windows and I was getting d/l rates of up to 3300-3400
cps with my 28.8K modem.

Now that I've installed NT, my d/l rates are topping out at around
1300-1350 cps.

What can I do to get my rates back up to where they should be? Thanks in
advance.

I routinely get about 15-1600 cps on zipped files with 14.4 - same as
what I used to get under Win 3.1.

In the Control Panel -> comm ports, try turning the FIFO check box on
and see if that helps. Another (guessing here)thing to ensure is that
the COM port is set to 38,700 or whatever and not set to a lower rate.

Greg,

One thing to check - there is a known problem using Procomm's Zmodem
implementation under NT. Try using a non-streaming protocol such as Ymodem-G.

As an aside, I've been running an old DOS version of Qmodem under NT with Zmodem
and it uploads/downloads great. Not sure why this is an issue specifically with
Procomm.

I think this may have been a problem with an older version of PCPLUS.
I use PCPLUS for Windows 2.0 under NT 3.5 and I get 1500-1600 cps
on already-compressed files on my 14.4kb modem. I get ~3600 cps
on text files.

I don't mean to point out the obvious, but has anyone checked on the
baud setting in the Control Panel | Port | Settings?

If you're using a fast modem, you should push this number up higher,
especially if you're using an external modem...

There is also a setting in the INI file which prevents Procomm from
dropping DTR while writing to disk. This is not necessary for NT and
you can pick up a few % improvment by changing it. I don't remember the
setting name, it's name is pretty obvious. The setting is also documented
in the manual.

I use Qmodem for Windows, and it works great - it wants to use a lot of
the processor, but the download speeds are fine. I get no difference
between that machine and my WfW machine.

They are supposed to be working on a Win32 version, but no release date
is available.

I ran Procomm 2.1 for windows and got 1630 cps for Zmodem of *.zip file.
In the NT commport setup I set the Com 2 rate to 57k and FIFO enabled.
I used the Promise 2300+ multi I/O 16550 serial port and a Boca 14.4
modem which connected to a local BBS at 14.4. From experience,
I would expect the rate to double for uncompressed files.

Darrell,
can u elaborate your point on Zmodem under Procomm? i am using Procomm
plus 2.11 for Window under NT... and so far i am lucky to have no
problem... i want to know what the problem is. thanks.

The problem typically is with download speeds. I do not know if 2.11 exhibits
this problem but 2.0 certainly did - with a clean 32bis connection (14.4) and
42bis compression, you may see CPS rates of ~400 to 500 (your mileage may vary).
As to the exact cause of this problem, I do not know. I found that switching to
a non-streaming protocol such as Ymodem-G seemed to bring the CPS rate back up
to normal.

Check out oak.oakland.edu in the SimTel/win3/commprog directory. There are 2 or
3 patch files to upgrade 2.xx to 2.11.
