Hi

I need a multiport serial adapter for Windows NT that works with RAS.
The HCL lists a few that are compatible but I would like to hear of
other cards and experiences with them.
I'd need an 8 or 16 port card that can operate without using one
interrupt for each port and preferrably has a stable driver.
Boca makes a 16 port card that sells for $200-$300. This is much cheaper
than other cards I've seen and I have no idea if it works under NT or even
if it is any good.
Anyway, all help would be appreciated either by email or posting here.

Thanks,

Magnus Sigurdsson

We use Consensys Systems' ChiliPorts, which is a multi-serial card
adapted specifically for RAS use. It's awesome, and I highly recommend
it.

I can only speak for the Digiboard's (I know, they are already in the NT
supported hardware list).

I have found these to work FLAWLESSLY. I have several different pieces
of equipment (epc/x, c/x, x/em), and every item works just fine and takes
a mere pitance of CPU time than regular serial ports. And they don't take
any interrupts either.

Currently I'm using the EPC/X line - it will do up to 230kb/port, and has
sufficient bandwidth to drive 115kb/port across 96 ports (or something
like that). I don't have anywhere near that bandwidth, but I do (easily)
pump 400-500mb of data a day through the EPC/X, and haven't dropped or lost
a single byte.

We installed a Specialix card in a Xenix machine last week and I
noticed that it came with NT drivers. Can't say whether they work
or not, though, but I'll find out next week when I install a 4-port
in an NT machine...

I know that Digiboards are reputed to work well, and I don't doubt
that this is the majority experience. But I put one on our DEC
Alpha 150 NTS server some months ago, and it hasn't worked, ever.
Numerous phone calls to both DEC and Digiboard never resolved the
problem. I've been too busy on other assignments recently to start
up the round of phone calls again, but I'll have to bite the bullet
eventually.

At system boot time, the event log records these messages:

"The DigiBoard FEP 5 Driver service failed to start due to
the following error: No serial device was successfully
initialized. The serial driver will unload."

and

"DigiBoard adapter ntxall9 was unable to initialize properly"

and

"Unable to reset ntxall9. Wait confirmation failed."

As far as DEC was able to determine, the card (8-port) was installed
and configured correctly. But it still doesn't work. If I ever
get this resolved, I'll post the solution.
