Please excuse this posting as I haven't been able to find any FAQ's
for this group.

If anybody can tell me what the NT stands for or what Windows NT is,
I'd appreciate it. Is it similar to Windows 3.11 or Windows 95 ?

Thanks,

Max

NT stands for 'New Technology' if you ask Microsoft, or some sources say
it stands for 'New Toy'. Windows NT 3.51 has the same interface as
Windows 3.1, and Windows NT 4.0 has the same interface as Windows 95.
The real difference is in the inside. Windows NT is far better at
multitasking, and much more stable. However, there is a price on
stability. NT does not run DOS programs very well, and also requires a
more powerful system to run as well as 95 or 3.1.

=======================
Max,

Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1 were all aimed at providing a Graphic
User Interface (GUI) for general computer users.

Windows for Workgroups was Microsoft's first attempt to make an GUI
operating environment for the business world - a GUI operating
environment that was also specifically designed to share file between
users.

Windows NT is Microsoft's successor to Windows for Workgroups. Designed
from scratch to avoid all the problems of a DOS/Windows overlay product
like Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT is fully 32-bit, runs ALL
application software and drivers in "Protected Mode", and is
specifically designed to share files with plenty of security and
protection. Windows NT 3.5 was the first product, followed by Windows
NT 3.51, followed by four Service Pack upgrades, and now Windows NT 4.0.

In the meantime, Microsoft has begun to create a better, general user
Windows to replace Windows 3.1. Windows 95 is still a DOS/windows
overlay type of product, and still has plenty of 16 bit code. It still
tolerates "real-mode" software and drivers. It has a fancy Graphic User
Interface (GUI) that does thing "automatically" for the average user.
Windows 95 already has its first full Service Pack.

By the way, Windows NT 4.0 has adopted the Windows 95 GUI.

It is probable that in the future, there will be a single Windows system
that is based upon Windows NT. Perhaps a no-file-share system to replace
Windows 95, a local-file-share system to replace Windows NT Workstation,
and a full file-server system to replace Windows NT Server.

There is a lot more that could be said and a lot of opinions concerning
all this but perhaps this gives you an introduction.

Close, but not quite...

Window's NT started with 3.1 (can't remember exactly *when*) but
predated
Window's for Workgroups. 3.5 was the first major upgrade (Dec 94) and
had
greatly improved performance and reduced requirements compared to its
predecessor.

Actually, the first release of NT was version 3.1, build 311(?) which
was followed almost immediately with a service pack and second build of
326, to allow NT to interact with Novell networks properly.
