I have a new Dell XPS Pro200n, NT Workstation build 1381 (SP1), 64
megs RAM, SCSI. I'm getting the following error when trying to
install apps using NT's Installshield:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is
being generated.
_INS0432._MP.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x00461cea

At first I thought the error was something a couple of DeLorme mapping
apps were producing, because it started when I changed my CDROM drive
to a lower drive letter so I'd have room for more HD partitions, etc.
I only had one CDROM app (DeLorme Map 'n' Go) installed already (it
had installed without incident), so I figured I'd better uninstall it
before changing the drive letter assignment and reinstall it
afterwards. When I uninstalled from Control Panel, it started asking
me if I wanted to delete a bunch of shared files that were apparently
not used by anything else, and advised that there would be no harm in
leaving them, so I answered No to All.

Then I changed the CDROM to R: with Disk Administrator. The system
saw it as R: just fine, but when I tried to reinstall Map 'n' Go, I
got the Dr. Watson error as above.

This was repeatable. I did a system restore from ConfigSafe (which
restores the Registry, etc.), which put the CDROM back to D:, but did
not completely restore the uninstall of Map 'n' Go, of course, as some
files had been deleted. Another attempt at reinstalling produced the
same error, as did an attempt to install another new DeLorme CDROM
app. Installing an older CDROM went OK, but I realize now it didn't
use Installshield.

Doing a file search on _ins0432 found only _ins0432._mp in the c:\temp
directory. Deleting it and trying the reinstall again produced the
same error. Note that the filename in the error message looks wrong;
it looks like a compressed .tmp extension with an .exe extension
tacked onto it.

Tonight I tried to install the Wintune 97 beta and got exactly the
same error. That's when I realized it was NT's Installshield that was
causing the error, not something specific to the DeLorme disks.

Any ideas?

If it helps, you are not the only one having this type of problem. I
have had a similar problem with at least three applications this past
month or so. The error message is a little different (different
locations), but it is extremely repeatable. I don't think it has
anything to do with your CD-ROM drive. I am also running NT 4.0. The
problem is reproducable on both my machine at the office (sp2) and the
machine at home (sp1) which have completely different hardware, memory,
etc. I have tried doing my own trouble-shooting to find the cause and
the best I can come up with is that the install-shield problem is loading
a certain .dll file at a memory location where other .dll files are
already loaded, causing the .dll file to be relocated and then the error
message is produced. One interesting observation is that I tried running
the program under an error checking program called Bounds Checker (a demo
version is available at www.numega.com) which gave me the above
information. For 2 of the programs, running them under bounds checker
still gave the error message, but allowed the programs to continue and
install. I still have one program that still refuses to install even
under Bounds Checker. I have been in touch with the tech support people
for the one application (KeyView Pro) and they keep promising to call
back and so far have failed to do so.

I'm glad its not just me having this problem. If you find a solution,
let me know and I will do likewise.

I had a simmilar problem last night. I tried to install the latest
Indeo drivers that were downloaded from the Intel site, but
unfortunately, 47% of the way into the installation it always hung.
A look at the task list showed that the process _INS0432._MP.exe
was the one which kept hanging.

Found the fix. Just delete *everything* in the temp directory.
