Hi,

Here's the problem.
I remotely administer a web server (NT 4.0.) with PcAnywhere. When I
transfer a file from my local computer to the webserver it loses the file
attribute 'Archive'. This means that the file cannot be accessed by other
programs.

This has happened several times and is extremely annoying.

I have checked in the newsgroups and dejanews, the only messages I have
seen are associated with Security Tabs gone missing in Explorer, file
attribute problems in MS-DOS and ntfs permissions in NT 4.0 and NT 3.51.
Nothing to do with mysteriously changing file 'Attribute' problems in NT
4.0.

The file system is NTFS, file permissions on C:\ are set to
'Administrators: Full Control' and 'Everyone: Change', permissions on
InetPub at the present time are Everyone:Full Control. I don't think this
affects the file attributes (?) because I read in Deja news that no matter
what the ntfs permissions are set to these are overidden by the file
attributes anyway!

So, if anybody out there knows why this attribute disappears can you please
mail me as soon as possible,

Thank you,
Anna

The main purpose of the Archive attribute is for backup programs to determine
which files should be backed up. What programs need it to access it?

Yes, well, the quality of information around is very varied. In an NTFS, the
file attributes have absolutely no bearing on whether someone can access or
read a file. Even the Read-Only attribute has little effect on whether
someone can write to or delete a file. Only the security permissions are
worth anything.

:mail me as soon as possible,

You haven't told us how you're transfering the file. Over a share? Via
something internal to PC Anywhere? If the latter, then take it up with the
software manufacturers.
