why use active directory?

Hello

I would like to know what are the advantages of using active directory. Our
company has about 85 workstations, one main server and another server
storing pictures. We have a VPN connecting one small group of people from a
remote office. I was told we should install active directory and I question
the reasoning behind this move. Can anyone tell me if we are a good
candidate for implimenting active directory and what the
advantages/disadvantages of active directory.
