I presently have a network of 8 computers peer to peer there will be
10 by september.
5 are running WFWG 311
3 are running WFWG Add on For MSDOS (this is a dos-only link to WFWG)
I use one of the WFWG as a pseudo server for our two shared main
applications We have some crash trouble.

I am considering moving to either NT SERVER or NT WORKSTATION as a
more stable sight for
the main application(CLIPPER-dos & FOXPRO-windows ).

One of the main application is a dos based clipper program.

If I replace WFWG311 on one of the machines with WIN NT will
everything still work as it did in WFWG311
only faster and more securely, or am I opening up a can of worms?

Any help ios greatly appreciated

DOS-only machines can connect to NT server - no problem.

Probably NOT faster - make sure you size the server machine
properly - you'll need at least 32mb on the server in order
for it to run "comfortably". A 486 with at least 32mb, a
FAST SCSI drive and a 1mb video card = low end server.
Probably want to hang a tape drive off of it too.

You may want to bounce this whole idea off of your local MS
rep... perhaps you can try their "Back Office Promotion" to
test it out...they give you 60 days to play
with all of it... "like it you buy it"...

You will get more security than you probably need for a
small lan, but it "comes with".

Why not purchase one WNT license (nominal fee) and do a simple
benchmark. Typically, DOS based apps run - but performance is
noticably SLOW. There can be some tuning but it's rather limited.

With NT - you gain reliability - (over DOS/Windows) but you pay
with performance when running DOS apps.
