Hi everyone,
Does anybody hear some offical, unofficial or gossips about
N.T 5.0 on DEC Alpha ? I've heard that there will not be a NT 5.0
version for DEC Alpha. Is that true ??

Thanks

Sounds false per the following Terry Shannon article.

Correctomundo. DEC is now saying that WNT 5.0 BETA will be available
before the end of the calendar year.

FWIW, DEC already has WNT 5.0 up and running in 64-bit mode internally.
Expect a "technology demonstration" by midyear.

Do you mean the 64-bit ALPHA version that is ALREADY running in Digital?

Absolutely INcorrect. I think your sources were talking the other RISC
platforms. There will be a large trade show with a live demonstration
of NT5.0 beta running on a very large Alpha next month in a large US
east coast city. I don't know if there has been a public announcement
of this yet, so I'll be a little vague :)

I believe Microsoft was considering dropping MIPS support for NT 5.0.

NT 5.0 will only be released on the DEC Alpha initially, then on other
platforms later

MS has dropped support for MIPS and the PowerPC. There is no intention to
drop the Alpha. NT 4.0 for Alpha already supports some 64-bit instructions
(integer, if I remember well), and it is the target for further 64-bit
development, at least until the Intel/HP processor arrives.

NT used to support:

80x86
PowerPC
MIPS
Alpha
PA-RISC (?)

Now only:

80x86
Alpha

A poor move in my opinion since they ARE trying to wipe UNiX off the face of
the earth with NT.. I hope that doesn't become true, but never underestimate
the power of a monopoly such as MS..

Microsoft doesn't usually turn down money, so I suppose they
figured that sales of NT on PowerPC/MIPS/PA-RISC were not making
money. That is, they ain't significant CPUs in terms of "wiping
Unix off the face of the earth".

I think it's a shame too, but simply because the more CPUs
a system will run on, the less it's likely to become bound
to any one of them in particular. I hope.

Don't know where you heard this, but I can assure you that it is not the
case :)) DEC and Microsoft have a very strong partnership. DEC
provided most of the clustering technology behind MS new wolfpack kit.

Currently the Alpha is the only true 64 bit technology out there, now
running at 633MHz in the real world. Intel and HP are have trouble
making their new chip run at over 233Mhz on the bench, due to heat
dissapation.

As far as I know, the "endangered species list" includes
MIPS and PowerPC, but not Alpha.

I've actually heard that NT 5.0 will be 64 bit for Alpha.. about one
year before Intel offers a true 64 bit chip.. just what I heard.

Carl.. the Alpha bigot <grin>.. clocked at 500Mhz
