Hi all,

I am a newbie to Windows NT. I was wondering the purpose
of DHCP & WINS servers.

Also is it necessary to have DHCP & WINS server on your
local area network ?

TIA

DHCP allows you to centralise IP configuration, and to assign IP
addresses to Workstations dynamically (out of a pool). WINS handles the
database of machine and NetBIOS names. None of them is really required;
you could statically configure each machine on the network with IP
address and routes etc, and you could use NetBEUI or IPX/SPX which use
broadcasts on the LAN to handle names. Pls get hold of a Win NT resource
Kit - it contains a fair explanation of the topic.

Rgds,

DHCP is used to dynamically allocate IP addresses to client computers
using the DHCP client.

WINS is used to map names(computer names) to IP addresses.

No, but it certainly is advisable.
