BACK OFF, ROLLBACK!
Microsoft has acknowledged that a file inadvertently included on both
the server and workstation CDs for Windows NT 4.0 will destroy
critical system information if it is run. The file, ROLLBACK.EXE
(located in SUPPORT\DEPTOOLS\<system>\), will delete NT's registry,
among other things. Microsoft warns, "Do not run this file on a
production system! There is no way to recover information erased by
running this utility, so anything stored in the registry will be
lost. This includes user account information, protocol bindings,
application settings, and user preferences."
The only fix to this problem is to restore the entire system from a
current tape backup. Emergency Repair Disk can't restore the system
because the repair disk requires the SETUP.LOG and registry
components, which ROLLBACK.EXE deletes.
