Hi all,

I've decided to take the plunge and buy the self-study kit to
prepare for the NT 3.5 Workstation Exam.

I've talked to several people, and this training course presents
the information that Microsoft considers important in a relatively
condensed format. Word is that it is the most efficient way to
prepare for the exam.

I have a truckload of NT books, the resource guide, and a TECHNET
subscription, but I find these sources fairly weak at providing the specialized,
applied information that Microsoft is testing. I have some experience using
NT, but still it looks like I would grow old hunting and gathering all the
info that MS requires.

"Supporting Microsoft Windows NT: Self Study Training Kit", course #309,
costs $500. What a screw job. But I hope it will save a lot of time.

I am going to use it for one week, will not write in it, and then
would like to sell it. Any takers? I imagine you can also resell the kit
when you are done with it.

I am going to buy the Advanced Server self-study kit next, and similarily
will wish to unload it. That training kit, course #317, also costs $500.
Ridiculous, but they got ya.

Sorry, slight correction:

Microsoft now covers both the NT 3.5 Workstation and 3.5 Server version in their
updated Self-Study kit. The new part number for the Self-Study kit is #454.

The kit numbers I mentioned before were for NT 3.1 exam preparation.

So, I should be done with kit #454, which prepares you for NT 3.5 exams
7042 and 7043, in two weeks. I won't write in it. The kit cost me $500.
Please email me if you are interested in purchasing it.

That's unusual. My NT 3.5 Server+Workstation Self-Study kit I just received
has a sticker on it that says it is on sale for a mere $150, and $200 after
June 30, 1995. Order #454-5985ACP.

Where are good places to order the self-study guides?
Microsoft told me to go through a local solution provider,
but I have had no luck with these people.

Where can I order these?

Thanks, Mike (Mike_Ke...@vos.stratus.com)

You are absolutely correct! I am the person who posted this originally. On
Monday of this week, I order the kit through a Solution Provider for $500.
Microsoft confirmed with me that this was the price.

Today, Wednesday, I see it in the bookstore for $150.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Microsoft has shipped it, and now I have to work this mess out with them. If they want
$500 out of me, they'll have to pry it out of my cold, dead fingers. A hundred people
have emailed me with interest in buying this damn kit. Sorry to be a source of this
confusion, I was a victim of MS stupidity.

So all you people who emailed me, just get it at a bookstore. And my sympathies to
anybody else who shelled-out $500.

I don't know the current status, but when I bought my $500 kit last year, it came
with a full version of NT/S, a TechNet CDROM, the tests to become certified
pre-paid, and was discounted for CNEs.

I don't know if this is still true, but if it is, it might help explain the price difference,
although you didn't mention getting any of these extras. Bummer.
I thought this program was still in effect recently, but it sounds like nobody you
talked to mentioned it, so it could be over now.

Do you have any comments on the effectiveness of the self study guides.
I am currently considering getting my MCSE, but costs for instructor led
classes are intimidating up to $10,000.
