Monday evening, Mary booted the PC to get a Service or Driver failed
to start message. Tuesday evening so did I. The message told me to
look in the event log for more information - there wasn't anything! So
I started delving (guessing would be a better description). All of a
sudden (Wednesday) the message went away and I thought "fine I've
fixed it" but Thursday morning it was back again. Thursday evening I
had a spark of inspiration - the time tat the message dissapeard, I'd
had the scanner turned on when I booted the PC - sure enough, if the
scanner is off when you boot, some UMAX service doesn't start. Another
clue came when I found that if I turned the scanner on after the PC
had booted, I couldn't use it until I booted again (this IS in the
documentation).
Does anyone know how to get rid of this message when I boot the PC and
the scanner is off please. TVM

Try this:
Open the services applet in control panel and change the startup parameter
for the UMAX service to "manual". Then it won't automatically start up
when you boot.
