Probably nothing. If you have a very old version of modem.inf you might
need a new one. Probably just select.

"USRoboticsGeneral Modem" I am using the sportster model but this is the
apropriate setting for the other 28s as well. Any problems you are having
are probably another configuration problem.

Hope this helps

Nothing magical. Normal RAS install procedure but you might want to install
3.5 SP2 first (or 3.51) as it has an updated modem.inf file which supports
these modems. Alternatively, check out USR bb. They have a modem.inf file but
of course it only supports USR modems.

US Robotics recommends replacing the existing NT 3.5 modem.inf with
their modem.inf. Of course their modem.inf is just the updates to
accomodate the newer USR modems and a generic or so and no other
modems.

The USR BBS number is 708-982-5092 8,n,1

Or if anyone out their wants a modified "modem.inf" which I currently
use on a RAS Server please email me directly. I modified the file to
replace only the references to USR modems. Be glad to send it and or
the USR "modem.inf".

Yes, I have the same modem. Call up USRobotics BBS and download the
modem.inf for NT 3.5. It's rally just a basic USRobotics modem.inf, but
I had the same problem, and that worked. The BBS number is listed in
your manual.

If your modem looks something like the following, GOOD LUCK! I have two of
these, never before used, purchase last year for a project just now comming online
and I have tried everything. They won't even answer and negociate a link. I've tried
every modem.inf, line monitors, and tons of different sotware. I've faxed USR for help
weeks ago but have heard nothing. I suspect this rev (08/24/94) is a dud!

USR has a new ROM for the V.34 Sportsers dated 4/18/95 that cures the
"spiral syndrome of death" problem, where the modem falls back (gets slower)
but never falls forward.

The following articles are from the comp.dcom.modems newsgroup; I seem to
recall a later statement from USR about the $ 15 charge.

Dear USRobotics Customers:

USR has received many comments about a condition identified by some
users as Spiraling Death Syndrome. The conditions stated are that
the Sportster v.34 modem degrades it's throughput speed as the product
heats up.

Although we have been unable to duplicate the problem on a large scale,
we have duplicated these symptoms on a very intermittent basis. However,
the current release of v.34 code (dated 4/18/95) has allowed for greater
variances in ambient temperature swings in addition to greater
compatibility to non-USR products. As a result, for the next 30 days,
USR is offering a code upgrade and fulfillment program at no cost to our
customers. Until June 9, 1995 customers simply need to contact USR at
708-982-5151 and prompt for Technical Support to validate the symptoms.
Upon validation, USR's Customer Service Department will process the
replacement code order.

Please note that this is a limited time offer. Effective Monday,
June 12, 1995 the standard code upgrade program goes back into effect.
This program requires a $15 fee to cover the extraction tool, handling
& shipping.

We thank our customers for continued support of USRobotics products
and it is our wish to maintain customer support and loyalty.

For those of you who are having difficulty ordering
the 4/18 ROM upgrade for the Sportster V.34, here
is an alternative:

Call the U.S.Robotics BBS at 708-982-5092.
At the main menu, type "SPV34".
Be ready with your serial number.
You can order the ROM upgrade through the BBS.

Turns out I received new ROMs from USR (for FREE) a couple of days ago and my
Sportster 28800s now work like a charm!

We are succesfully using US Robotics 28,800 externals at the server
end plugged into a digiboard with internal 28,800's plugged into the
client end - no problem. So it can be done.

However when it comes to PCMCIA modems that's another matter (see my
other posting). They make the connection, callback is made, but then
instead of realising the user is then logged on when the user tries to
access any network drive the user gets asked to log in again, when the
login form is filled in and the user presses enter the system hangs.

Do you want copies of our modem.inf files for the 28,800's - if so internal
or external.

Which USR 28800 do you use - the Sportster or the Courier? If the
Courier, what makes is worth $~200 more than the Sportster?

The Courier is in a metal case and does not get pulled off you desk as
easily as the sportster.

It also has ASL, which gives you more reliable connections, which lose
carrier much less frequently, and slightly better transfer rates,
certainly more consistent rates.

I much prefer the Courier.

The Courier does not come in metal case (even if it has a more normal and
better design with the LED's on the front).

The differnece is mostly hardawre (Flash upgrades, no ROM:s to wait for and
double DSP:s) and the software (supports more standards like V.terbo and
has a more reliable connect).

I heard a romour that the Courier will have a software update for 31.6 kbps.

Is this true?

I like your keen observations Jim! The newer Couriers are appartently
plastic cased yet it's form factor still seems to keep it from being
pulled off the desk whereas I can see that the Sportsters would be.

Also some one I spoke with recently claimed that the Sportsters used
in his business (24 hours a day) failed whereas the Couriers did not.
Mere hearsay of course yet that is what he claimed.

I think I read a similar question about the sportster (which I have)
and the courier, and the response from someone was the courier is
flash upgradeable. Someone said with software they flash upgraded
their courier and went from 28.8 to 33.6 or something like that. That
wouldn't interest me right now because with my lines I can rarely
connect over 26400. I think also the courier has a broader spectrum
of connect speeds with various types of other modems on the other end.

There is a problem with V.34 Sportsters made before April, 1995, that cause
them to get slower a-n-d s-l-o-w-e-r.

The ATI7 command publishes the firmware date; the ROM chip that fixes the
problem is dated 4/18/95.

The following article tells how to get a new ROM chip.
