fax software won't automatically receieve faxes

hello:

i can't get my fax software to automatically detect incoming faxes. it
sends faxes fine, and if i select "receieve now" it will receive it,
but for some reason it doesn't detect when the phone is ringing. i've
tried 2 different modems (1 ISA and 1 PCI) and also tried winfax and
the built in fax software (im using windows 2000 SP3). i also tried
opening terminal and having it automatically pick up incoming calls
but it doesn't seem to detect it either. does anyone have any ideas?

Are you saying it doesn't answer when the phone rings? Or are you
referring to having the modem grab the line when it hears fax tones
after the phone is answered (by you or the answering machine). The
later is an option supported on some modems, but needs to be turned on
either manualyy in the AT configuration string or possibly by the fax
software.
