I know this may sound like a real newbie question, which it is regarding NT,
but what's the difference between Windows NT Server and Windows NT
Workstation?

My thinking is that they are both the same basic system, but Server adds file
server and other features to the base NT Workstation.

I've been running two PC's and one Mac in a small business environment using
Personal Netware and MacLan Connect. These are peer to peer products. One
PC runs Win95 the other DOS. I'm adding two more Windows machines to the
network and am looking for something that might be a little faster and more
reliable than the current setup.

Any and all comments are welcomed.

One definate difference is that Workstation only allows ten concurrent
network connections.

You can 'serve' files from Workstation.

Server mostly adds tools for managing the server and its users, and licensing
for more simultaneous connections. Server can be a 'domain controller' for
network-wide logins, Workstation can't. Workstation may not have some stuff
for supporting Macintoshes, I don't know. The default scheduling (etc) parameters
are different between Workstation and Server, to fit the intended usage.

But underneath it all it's the same operating system.

The main difference is the marketing...

However, Server and Workstation are optimised for their separate
roles. Server also comes with more networking features.

I would suggest getting Windows NT Server. One of the additional
networking features you get with Win NT Server is the Macintosh File
and Print server. In other words, your Mac and your PCs can all use
the NT Server as their file/print server without any additional
software or hardware.

BTW, in a small LAN like yours NT Server can also be used as a
workstation at the same time as it is serving network clients.
