Our network is connected to the internet through a Win2000 machine, which
also acts as a proxy/router. Whenever I start the Routing and Remote Access
service to enable VPN, we loose access to the Internet. I cannot even make a
ping to the outside, it's like the service completely shuts down all the
doors. When we stop the service, everything works fine again. This problem
appeared after we reinstalled the machine from scratch. The configuration is
identical to the previous machine, or so I thought. But there's obviously
something that I overlooked? What can possibly shut all access to the
Internet once we start RRAS? I verified that there were no filters, that all
the IP addresses were written correctly. Everything seems correct, but it
doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Go into Internet Explorer and uncheck your proxy server settings on
Tools/Connections/Lan Settings. Try that and then retry your VPN.

Thanks you for all the answers I got. In the end, I finally identified the
problem, although I am a t a loss to explain why Windows does that: when you
deactivate and reactivate RRAS (ie. creating a new VPN from scratch), new IP
filters are automatically created in the interface's properties pages, which
are of course blocking all trafic as soon as RRAS is up. Once these are
corrected, everything works fine... or almost everything (see my other
postings)
