- Small LAN w/1 NT 4.0 (SP 6a) PDC, one XP Pro client
- AT&T Cable Modem is connected to uplink port on a 5-port hub
- NT Server and XP Pro client are connect to other ports on the hub
- NT Server and XP Pro client are configured for DHCP as supplied by the
cable modem
Problem:
- I can't logon to the NT domain. I can ping the gateway (the cable modem)
only sometimes, but can ping the AT&T's DNS servers and domains out on the
web (can also browse the web no problem).
- I can't ping the NT server from the XP Pro client, nor can the NT server
ping the XP Pro client.
- Can ping other workstations in the office that are using the cable modem
as their DHCP server as well, so they're on the same subnet.
Why? The server has an IP of 192.168.1.6, XP client has an IP of
192.168.1.4. Both are on a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
Have read alot on UseNet and made sure encryption in local policies on the
XP client is turned off, the NT Server is service pack 6a. Networking
wizard on XP client keeps saying "Domain <name> could not be found," with
details stating:
"The domain name <name> might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the
case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the
following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain <name>:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.<name>
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child
zone:
<name>
. (the root zone)"
Any help or pointers appreciated in advance.
