We just built a new BDC, which worked fine for a while, but suddenly started
developping strange problems (the machine was left unattended during holiday
season). At bootup and aftewards, when we hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, a message
stating "Please wait while domain list is created" appears. When we hit
Ctrl+Alt+Del a second time, then the normal logon dialog box appears. This
is systematic. Event viewer says "Logon Failed, access denied", and "Failed
to authenticate with \\pdcserver01, a domain controller for domain Permabec
(Where PDCServer01 is our PDC). The BDC is assigned a fixed IP adress, just
like the old BDC which works perfectly.

The BDC's name appears in the Server Manager, but is greyed out. However,
when I click, I don't receive any error messages. Both PDC and BDC are
WinNT4 sp6a.

Any suggestions?

sounds like you might have a secure-channel problem, or the secrets key with
the machine account might be corrupt....try nltest /server:yourserver
sc_query:domainname
that should verify whether your server is talking to the pdc correctly
try resetting the secure channel by typing nltest /server:yourserver
/sc_reset:domainname

if the secrets key is corrupt in the reistry, there are a couple of
knowledge base articles, with a couple of suggested fixes, but they didn't
help me much...

If all else fails, I would create a new account from the pdc, rename the
server to that name, delete the old account and synch the domain...repeat
the process to rename it back to the original name...this will ensure that
the machine accounts info in the registry is re-created
