Hi, there!

I've got the Soundblaster AWE32 PnP card and used the NT4 driver
supplied by Creative Labs (awent40.exe), but I can't get MIDI files to
play. Everything else seems to be working OK and the MIDI drivers in
the Multimedia section of the control panel say "no conflicts" but if
I try to play MIDI files it won't work. That is the program - e.g.
Media Player even opens the file and I can see the file being played
(control is moving) but no sound...

If you have the same Card and it works, or if you know how to set it
up to get it to work, please get in touch!

Thanx!
Jens ;-)

Jens,

I've had the same problem since January. Spent almost an hour on the
line with Creative Tech support and they weren't able to fix it either.
Has to do with certain models of the AWE32 pnp - some work and some
don't. I finally gave up on MIDI and boot to Win95 when I need it.

If you come up with a workable solution, please let me know.

I had the same problem. Here's some of the things I had to do:

Manually remove the MIDI/AWE32 driver and then readd it using Multimedia in
control panel, and then "Add".

It said no conflicts, but I checked the Event Log (Start, Programs, Admin
Tools, Event Log) and noticed I was getting conflicts there. So I manually
set my drivers to:
220-22F, 300-301, 388-38B, 01(starting DMA), 05(ending DMA), 10(IRQ #)

---------
The problem now is I can't record using my microphone! The volume control
for recording is dimmed.
Any ideas?

I had the same problem after installing NT 4.0 workstation.
Now this works fine for me, but it was very complicated to
bring it up. I have checked the "algorithm" two times with
new NT installations and it reproducable works, but maybe there
are better solutions:

1. Download AWENT40.EXE and also AWENTPNP.EXE from Creative's
server (http://www.cle.creaf.com/wwwnew/tech/ftp/ftp-sb16awe.html#nt).

2. Expand the archives in different directories.

3. Replace the two file "SBAWE32.DRV" and "SBAWE32.SYS" in the
"AWENT40.EXE" directory by the versions from AWENTPNP.EXE.
(should both have the date 97/01/10,04:05).
You may put this modified directory onto an floppy or install
later from this directory.

4. On NT installation follow the following steps. If you will not
install NT again, try to remove all sound drivers and reboot, so you
should
see the "new hardware detected" for your sound card components (but I'm
not sure).

Because I have a german NT version I don't exactly know the english
message texts but I hope you can identify them.

In the following protocol with my installation steps the drive X: is
my CD-Rom drive with the NT-CD in it and the directory
F:\drivers.nt\nt40\SBLASTER is the place where the modified driver

(built in step 1 to 3) resides.

# install PnP driver (if necessary)
X:\drvlib\pnpisa\x86\pnpisa.inf->install
automatic reboot

New hardware detected: Creative SB32 PnP(Audio)
-> select: "Manufactors disc"
-> F:\drivers.nt\nt40\SBLASTER
-> select: Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play
-> Ressources unchanged if no conflict:
(This are my values)
IO: 0220-022F
IO: 0330-0331
IO: 0388-038B
DMA: 01
DMA: 05
IRQ: 05
-> OK
New hardware detected: Creative SB32 PnP(Game)
-> select: "Manufactors disc"
-> X:\drvlib\audio\sbpnp\i386
-> select: Microsoft Joystick Port Enabler
-> Ressources unchanged if no conflict:
IO: 0200-0207
-> OK
New hardware detected: Creative Advanced Wave Effects...
-> select: Selection from alternative drivers
-> select: Creative Labs Advanced Wave Effects Synthesis for AWE 32
-> OK
New hardware detected: IDE CD-ROM ...
-> do not install any driver (I do not use this IDE port)
-> OK
automatic reboot

open control panel
-> open: Multimedia
-> Tab: Devices
-> expand tree: MIDI devices
-> select: MIDI/AUX low level support
-> click: remove
-> click: add
-> select: new driver
-> F:\drivers.nt\nt40\SBLASTER
-> select: Creative Sound Blaster AWE 32 MIDI Synth
-> OK
automatic reboot

open control panel
-> open: Multimedia
-> Tab: Midi
-> select: SB AWE32 ...
-> OK
test

Hope this helps,
Peter

I have wave and midi working, but have any of you that also have them
working tried to play the "Pinball" game included with NT? Using the
new SB drivers, I have system wave sounds, and AWE midi but under
Pinball the video gets jerky and the sounds cut out when a lot of sounds
are triggerd quickly.

This happens on two machine I have one with PNP SB, one with legacy isa
SB. Both machines work perfectly under Win95, and do not exhibit this
problem with the Pinball program.

Am I the only one to notice this? Is there a fix or setting I have
missed?

Please email or post responses.

Thanks,

I don't know if this helps but:

I have a SB16 and a waveblaster daughterboard. After installing the
sb-drivers it only played FM synthesis. (the same with awe40 drivers).

I added "basic midi drivers" (or so, sorry I got the german version), and
after reboot it played wavetable sounds :-)

Figured it out by a deeeeep look into the registry :-)

Hope this helps,
Martin

Install the wav and midi drivers that came in awent40.exe as normal (I
guess you have already done that!).

Download awentpnp.exe and expand it to a directory.

Use control panel->devices to stop the two creative labs drivers

copy the file sbawe32.drv to %systemroot%\system32

restart the machine

Yes. That version is 16bit, i.e. Windows 3.1, code, and uses a goofed up DLL
called WaveMix. It is generally not very 32-bit happy.

Interesting - it usually hoses in any 32bit OS. There is a real 32bit version,
but it was released after NT4. The full version is called FullTilt! Pinball,
and was made by an outfit called Cinematronics; they were bought out by some
useless fools called Maxis. WWW.MAXIS.COM or 1-800-33-MAXIS if you want to buy
iy :-(

Disclaimer: I used to work for them (Maxis), hated it.

I had the same problem and fixed it like this... (I no longer have NT on my
machine, so I'm going from memory here) I went into Control Panel |
Multimedia | Midi. There is a list of MIDI devices available (or maybe they
were called Instrument Definitions?), though none are highlighted. Select
the appropriate one (called C.L. SB-AWE or something like that) and click
OK. MIDI should work now. (You may need to reboot first--I can't remember)

It kinda pissed me off that the answer was so simple, yet the instructions
from Creative Labs made no mention of this step.

Hope this works.

PS - As I said, I'm going strictly from memory here, but I seem to recall
that once I had to browse for an .idf (instrument definition file) which
should be located in the \winnt\config directory.

OK guys, close but no cigar
First blat the driver that is installed it will just get in the way.
You nead the file awentpnp.exe NOT awent40from creative labs site.
Read the NT 4.0 faq .........but the jist is... It is important to
firstly install the sb16 driver then without rebooting add the creative
awe 32 midi synth labs driver configure it then reboot. DONT REBOOT
until you've got both in, in that order. IDFs by the way are just the
instrument definition files which set instruments up for the midi system
they will alter the sound but not stop it completely.

This drove me up the wall forever!!! You have to install the MIDI for
low level WAVE, MIDI and AUX support driver which is a standard NT
driver. Why it's not installed by default in NT 4.0 is beyond me.

It indeed doesn't seem to make any sense, but your suggestion really
helped me out. Before installing the awent40.exe supplied drivers, I

1st off you can check to see if your media player under <START>
<PROGRAMS>
<ACCESSORIES><MULTIMEDIA><MEDIA PLAYER><Device> has an option
for MIDI Sequencer..

If not then a program you installed after the installation of AWE 64
removed midi
sequencing and it's just a matter of going into Control Panel - Settings
- Multimedia -
Audio - Devices - Media Control Devices and adding Midi Sequencing
again...

Just click on ADD, choose MIDI Sequencing..
