Write down the static mappings. Delete the WINS database. Recreate the
static mappings. The others will get recreated.

I came in late to this thread, but let me take a flyer. The "weird"
looking entries in the WINS database are fine. They are the NetBIOS mung
floating through the network that the WINS servers caught.

In any event ... static mapping are fine if the computers use static ip.
I usually set my servers up with static IP, put a static mapping in the
WINS DB for them, and the DHCP and come as you are for the rest. If the
TCP/IP settings on the workstations tell the client the WINS server is
at X.X.X.X then by default any NetBIOS requests first check the WINS DB
to resolve a name request, then the DNS then the HOST file and Finally
broadcast.

If you need to purge the DB, that's fine too. WINS collects info about a
computer before giving it the answer to a request. So, if it doesn't
know me but I ask it for a computer's IP by name, it gets my info then
gives the answer. That way, everyone registers with the WINS DB....so
blowing it out isn't the end of the world.

Your exchange server might not like you in the morning though =)

Hope it helps.

John
