I have a Windows 95 system. When I make "ping localhost" in the MS-DOS
prompt I get the message :
"Bad IP address localhost."
I have TCP/IP installed. I am able to connect to the Internet, and so
ping any address (by name or IP) with no problems. When I am connected
with the Internet the ping localhost command works fine.
In the file hosts.sam I have the line :
127.0.0.1 localhost
What is wrong ?
Thanks and sorry my bad English.

I did it. See message 2 and 3 of this thread in Dejanews. Don't work.
Thanks.
Ping 127.0.0.1 works fine. I don't have other IP address because it is
a standalone computer.
I did not arrive at no solution for the problem. But I stow making
some tests that can become the cause of the problem clearest.
The computer where this is happening is not connected to a network. It
possesss only the dial-up adapter and the protocol TCP/IP.
Protocol TCP/IP is configured to get the address IP automatically,
therefore this is the configuration for access my ISP. If in the
configuration of the TCP/IP I to place a fixed IP address I am able to
make ping localhost when off-line successfully. This was only one test,
cannot leave thus therefore in this in case that I cannot have access
the Internet.
Thus it seems that the Windows demands that I have a protocol TCP/IP
with fixed address to function.
The question is: how I make this to function if I do not have network
card ?
