D-Link DAP-1522 acting just as a WAP, not a bridge.
Asus 901 1.6ghz Atom-powered notebook doing WiFi-N and connected
to the DIR-655's WiFi network - watching .iso movies via VLC
Media Player.
When just the DIR-655 is powered up the notebook's connection is
A-OK: always strong and pretty steady (120-150 kbps per Windows
WiFi window); and the rendering of movies is smooth/seamless.
But when the DAP-1522 is also on line, the notebooks connection
to the DIR-655 seems to get flaky: speeds vary from
minute-to-minute down to 40mbps, up to the occasional 80-some;
and the movies frequently pause for 5-20 seconds at a time so
often that they are not watchable.
Power off the DAP-1522 and things go back to normal.
Nothing is connected to the 655, it's just sitting there,
Ether-netted to the LAN.
Seems like they're butting heads.
Can anybody elucidate?
Workarounds? Maybe something about putting one WAP on one freq
and the other WAP on another freq?

Yes, you should check that they are using different channels, and it's
also worth checking that you're using channels which are least-used in
your neighbourhood. The free netstumbler utility will disclose what's
"busy" around you. You'd change the channels (normally) by connecting
to the device's internal web page by putting http://a.b.c.d where
a.b.c.d is the WAP's IP address. If you don't know this, try
downloading SoftPerfect's (excellent) free network scanner.
