Control Panel -> Add Printer -> Network printer -> Connect to printer
on the Internet URL
It worked but the name of the printer is now "Printer Name on
http://192.168.1.104", which is pretty ugly. How do I rename it, as I
would like to make it easy to identify in a list of printers we have.
When I right-click the printer, it doesn't give me the option to
rename it,
Thanks, Scott
Can't test this theory at the moment, but doesn't the name of the remote
printer come from settings on the printer itself? If it's a standalone
printer, try connecting with a browser and see if there are options to
change the name there.

Since Win2K, there's not been any way for a Windows client to change the name
of a network printer. Mostly because the client only has a link to the printer
object on the printer server - there is no actual printer object on the client
to rename...

Sure, but more sophisticated network printers (have seen a whole bunch
of them) have a web interface which allows administrative adjustments
like changing the published name. Have done this myself several times.
Sorry if my original post wasn't clear: you connect using a web
browser to the printer's IP address (sometimes on port 8080) to see (if)
these facilities (exist).

Assuming that you can print directly to the printer without a print
server, I find that the following sequence usually works better:
Add Printer -> Local Printer (no "Automatic) -> Create New Port
Type of Port: Standard TCP/IP Port -> Next -> Next -> Enter IP
Address of printer... [etc, etc]
The trick is to select "Local Printer" instead of "Network Printer".
Installing as a local printer allows you to change the name easily.
