I want to be able to change the location of the folder that My documents
points to.
I log into the network and right click my documents>properties> and change
the target
I log off and next time I log on again the target has gone back to the local
c drive
How do I make this setting permament?
Network runs Windows 2000 Server and clients using Win XP pro
thanks
CH!
Using Windows Explorer, right click and drag the My Documents folder icon to
the desired new location, then select "Move to here" from the pop-up dialog...

Aw, crap. My bad.
I knew I should have parsed that text. I clipped it from TweakUI for XP Pro,
fwiw, which you can use to *change* the location - just as right-clicking on
the My Documents shortcut allows - but it won't actually move the existing
folder to that new location, hence its recommendation to drag the actual
folder.
The text is obviously ambiguous, because Explorer will indeed show a "My
Documents" *shortcut* at the "Desktop" level just as it will show whatever
number of unique "User's Documents" *shortcuts* at the "My Computer" level.
None of those are actual folders, however. The text (and/or I) should have
been more specific.
So, you have to find the actual icon for the folder, not for the shortcut.
It is usually located in the boot partition at
\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents
On XP Pro systems, at least, if you move the actual folder, the shortcuts
should automagically update to point to the new location. I believe the same
behavior was present with Win 2K, but it's been awhile since I've used that.

OK thanks for double checking
I'll try that and test if it works.
Ive discouvered that the only way to keep settings like that stored when
switching from one computer to another on the network is by setting up
roaming profiles to be stored on the server and accessed at log in to over
ride local settings.
But I gotta test that too...
