in a site where there a pdc and bdc and the pdc was being replaced
completely how would you recommend the changeover take place and things to
be carefull of. Does MS have any white papers on this

Using Server Manager, promote the BDC to the PDC.
Remove/replace the previous PDC and reinstall the new computer as a
BDC

Wait for synchronization to complete, then promote the new machine to
PDC.

Yep, Before taking out the PDC go to Server Manager and promote your BDC to
PDC, after this install NT on the new box as BDC, hook it up to network and
promote to PDC.
BTW. You have to do promotion from the PDC (whichever it is)

First, promote the BDC to PDC and remove the original PDC (so you can
se the same computername for the replacement).

Install NT on the new machine and set it up as a BDC for the existing
domain.

When installed, promote new machine to PDC, and you're done. :-)

... Malice is merely stupidity raised to a higher power.
