Windows 3.1 256 Color Display Driver Release Notes
Copyright 1993 Microsoft Corporation
--------------------------------------------------
This disk contains a new high-speed 256 color display driver
for Windows 3.1 which supports most non-accelerated Super VGA
display types. If you have a Video card other than what is
listed below you may not want to use these drivers.
For 800x600 256 colors and 1024x768 256 colorsresolutions
you will need 1Mb of memory on you video card.
You can install this driver by using Windows
Setup to select one of the following display types:
Super VGA 640x480 256 colors
Super VGA 800x600 256 Large ; Large fonts
Super VGA 800x600 256 Small ; Small fonts
Super VGA 1024x768 256 Large ; Large fonts
Super VGA 1024x768 256 Small ; Small fonts
Displays supported by these selections include the following:
ATI VGA series, including
ATI VGA Wonder
ATI VGA Wonder Plus
ATI VGA Wonder 24XL
Cirrus Logic VGA (6420, 5420 series)
Oak Technology VGA (077 series)
Paradise VGA, including
Paradise VGA 1024
Paradise VGA Professional
Trident VGA (8900C series) *, including
Trident Impact
Tseng VGA (ET4000 series) **, including:
Boca VGA
Cardinal VGA
Diamond Speedstar series
Everex Viewpoint series
Metheus Premier VGA
Orchid Prodesigner II
Sigma VGA Legend
STB Powergraph
Video Seven VGA, including
Video Seven FastWrite
Video Seven 1024i
Video Seven VRAM
Video Seven VRAM II
Western Digital VGA
* NOTE: MS-DOS applications run on Trident adapters may not
be restored correctly when switched back to full-screen
mode from Windows.
** NOTE: MS-DOS applications run on some Tseng ET4000 adapters
may not be restored correctly when switched back to
full-screen mode from Windows. If this happens,
use Windows Setup to select one of the ET4000 options.
However, this may slow the operation of windowed
MS-DOS applications.
Well, I downloaded these and installed them and saw ~50% improvement in
my Windows speed. The one drawback, and it's a major one, is that part
about full-screen DOS windows; when I switch to it, it's unusable.
Big bummer!

So if you don't do much DOS windows, or can live with DOS-in-a-Window,
these are really fine.
NOT!
My WD/Paradise P1D with 1MB doesn't work cleanly. If I drag a window
downwards, it leaves a trail of ghost-like images.
My card works fine with the SVGA 256-color 640x480 800x600 1024x768 drivers
that came with it.

My ATI VgaWonder w/ 512K also does not work in 800X600 256 color mode. The
first 2/3's or the screen is correct but the last 1/3 or the screen is a
wrap around from the 1st 1/3 or the screen. If recollection serves me
correctly.

Me too. My paradise clone (WD90C00 chip) works fine with WD drivers,
but the new MS drivers leave garbage on the screen.

Mark,
Try setting your STACKS= statement in the config.sys to STACKS=12,512 and
exclude the video address region (A000-C7FF) from both your memory manger in
the config.sys (EMM386.EXE X=A000-C7FF) and from Windows in the 386enh section
of the system.ini (EMMExclude=A000-C7FF) and see if that helps.

Hey, don't forget you need 1MB vga card to run 256 color in 800x600 mode

My computer has an OAK 067 512KB card. The drivers from manufacture
is slow in 640X480 256 and 800X600 16 mode. When I switch to MS generic
drivers, in 640X480 256 mode, performence increases from 49 to 68. The
index is obtained using a simple program from PC Mag. In standard VGA mode,
the index is 74. It makes a big difference. My feeling is that the
manufactures are more interested in providing new hardware, at least this is
true for those low end cards.

I cannot speak for Mark, but in my case this does not help. I excluded
the A000-C7FF region in both emm386 and 386Enh, and it had no effect
on the problem. DRDOS does not use stacks, so I could not try that.
Has anyone used the MS SVGA drivers successfully with a Paradise
PVGA1a or WD90C00 (might be the same thing) board ?

And another nice thing is that it won't switch to text mode for a moment
after showing the welcome banner. But it is ridiculous to see that an older
driver can switch to dos mode correctly while this one can't.
I am also using TVGA8900C (ugh... )

I never have had "STACKS" explained properly to me- I just know it sets up
hardware stacks. Which apps use it, and what are some guidelines to the
params to use? What's the failure mode look like for insufficent allocs?

Just have a look at the readme.txt. It says you need 1MB for 800*600*256.
Although many cards seem to become faster with the new driver my ATI Vantage
with 512K VGA (like VGA Wonder) is a little slower with the new drivers (VGA
Mode not Mach8/8514 !!!). If I reduce refresh rate at 800*600 to 70Hz from
72Hz the card is able to use 800*600*256 with the ATI drivers in VGA mode with
512K. But it is terrible slow in this mode. My experience with many different
SVGA cards (ET4000, Trident, Video 7, ATI) are that the most reliable and
fastest drivers are the VGA and Super VGA drivers shipped with windows in 16
color mode. For word processing, spreadsheets, databases, ... it is enough.
Only for pictures you need more. In this case you just swith for a short time
the driver.

Rob,
Those generic SVGA drivers for Microsoft's don't seem to work very well - I
tried them in various combinations on a Dell 486P/50 (has a WD 90C31 chipset)
and got lousy results (bad distortions mostly). So use at your own risk.

Kenny,
Basically the STACKS command allocates how many stacks are available for
hardware interupts and how much memory, in bytes, is available for that
interupt. Just about every app uses it, failures can show up a number of
different ways (GPFs in Windows, video distortion, etc.)

Both the SVGA and the WD9030 (specific to my chipset) drivers
from MS screw up the screen when loaded in 640X480 256 colors.
They put pieces of duplicate bit map on the screen. I have the
1/2 Mb Paradise VGA1024 with the 9030 chip, have always excluded
A000-CF77 in emm setup and system.ini. The suggestion of
increasing the stacks to 15,512 was tried and stabilized the
problem without removing it, while taking up 11kb of conventional
memory. I'm having difficulty getting a clean connection to WD's
BBS. Is the current WD version of the svga driver for the
wd90030 chip available at any archive site? They keep changing
the name of the damn file, making archie useless.
I screwed up not keeping an archival copy of the old copy that I
had. Can anyone with a copy uuencode it and email it to me?
Thanks.

What kind of swapfile are you using? Permanent? Temporary? None?
If you are not using any swapfile, try to set aside at least 4MB for
a permanent swap file to see if the problems disappear.

They are hardly faster than the NEW trident Drivers (uplodaded on the same site
trident.zip). The trident drivers don't give you the problems with the
dos window! It's really annoying.
