I am trying to do useful things in Windows, but it crashes often
for no apparent reason except that I am trying to do multiple things at
once.
My father who has a similar setup to mine (software-wise) says he doesn't
have the same problems, but he's using the MS-dos memory manager. So I am
wondering if it is QEMM.. Does anyone out there use QEMM 7.04 and windows?
Does it work fine? I'd like to get some opinions before I waste hours
fiddling around with my configuration, and try to reproduce crashes.

QEMM is touchy. I too used it for a while and had problems with Windows,
reverted back to Memmaker, and have not had a problem since.
The nice thing about QEMM is that it's almost infinitely configurable.
But of course all these variables it gives you mean you never quite
know what's going to happen. I finally figured out that some of my
drivers were being overwritten by QEMM when I switched back and forth
between QEMM and Memmaker one day. I tried fixing it, but couldn't.
So, I just dumped QEMM.
Windows doesn't really need a lot of conventional memory. You might
try setting up multiple configs - one with no memory management at all
and one optimized by QEMM for your DOS programs. That's basically
what I eventually did, except I ended up just using Memmaker instead
of QEMM for my 2nd config.

I used to use that combination on my old laptop with no problems. It is
now happily running wfwg 3.11 and QEMM 7.04 for its new owner. My wife
uses that combination on her computer without problems.

I tried to, but it took everything I knew and about 45 minutes of
tech support from Quarterdeck just to get it to load -- and then
Windows crashed. And crashed. And crashed.
I'd really like to be able to use QEMM because it's more efficient
at eeking out that last little bit of low memory, but I can't
tolerate the continuous crashes.
Needless to say, I'm back to HIMEM and EMM386.

I use Win 3.1 and QEMM 7.04 - haven't had any problems. What hardware/dos
version are you using?

Same here - a 486dx2/66 with ncr 53c810 SCSI, Win 3.11, QEMM7.04 and not a
single problem :-)

I may have said this before, but it's the type of drivers you're using and
where they're being loaded. Sometimes QEMM can overwrite them, or prevent
their being loaded, depending on how you've got the memory mapped out. This
is what happened to me with my CD Rom driver, and I couldn't manage to get
both the driver and Windows to load at the same time with QEMM, so I just
scrapped it.

Hi Alan,
I have it and it wouldn`t run windows till i turned the stealth
option off.
Hope that helps.

Me too. No problems on my Digital 486DX machine.
However, on my NEC Versa laptop it was a different story. Almost everything
in Windows works, except for the Control Panel. It kept crashing. So I had
to have a different Config.sys when I needed to access the Control Panel in
Windows ! But I now live with that, cos I get 634 Meg free memory space after
I boot.
I do not have any problems on my Austin 486sx/25 notebook. I had problem with
MFT, but soon as I took out the video address, it is working fine.
I got 634 free memory space, loading MS-mouse 9.00, Doskey etc................
