For some reason I cannot add new fonts. The normal command in the configuration folder has disappeared (!?!) and I cannot find
anywhere in my windows directory a executable that does it normally.
Who can help me, I want to use my fonts, about 300 TTF, again?

Hi, all I do is copy it to the \WINDOWS\FONTS folder, it works for
me...., hope it works for you :-)

Not sure where you're looking - what's the "configuration
folder"? There's a Fonts icon in the Control Panel - when you
open it, select File then choose Install New Font....

I have seen this problem recently on new computers we buy from a
factory. These computers have been had there windows 95 loaded from a
master hard disk and in the process apparently lose the add font
function in the fonts folder. I wonder if you have recently
reinstalled from a backup? The only solution so far is to reinstall
windows over the existing instrallation - this is quite safe (should
be no loss of data or setup info ofcourse) and definitely fixed the
problem.

I had the same problem on my computer as well.

Just copying the *.ttf files to their destination directory did not
solve the problem on my system. This only works, if the dialog "add
new fonts" has not disappeared.
Actually it does not disappear, but it is just not there - no matter
what you do or how you have installed your Win95.
You either add the fonts manually to the registry
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts\),
but I would not recommend that for over 300 Fonts !
The other way to solve the problem is to reinstall Win95 (Don't be
affraid, you won't loose your settings). But do not use the CD-ROM
your Win95 was installed with before, this won't work. The bug is
caused by your Win95-CD-ROM. Just get another CD (possibly one that
was bougth later than yours) and try it. I haven't found a way yet, to
differ the CDs (which will do it and which not) before installing
them.
If you found a CD that fixed the bug and discoverd the difference
between them, please let me know.
Good luck !

There is a bug that happens in Windows 95 where the Fonts
folder's special ability to add new fonts disappears. Get the new
PowerToys from Microsoft's web site to fix this problem; TweakUI
has an option called "repair fonts folder."

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/kb/ and search for "font folder
commands missing".
You should try TweakUI, included in Microsoft's Powertoys. It
is free, new version has just been released, and TweakUI now has
'Repair Fonts folder' command which helps "...if your Fonts
folder has lost its magic...". You can download it from Microsoft
Web server (http://www.microsoft.com/).

Hi Eric,
In my discussions with another user It was indicated that the font
subdirectory had lost it's system attribute. I have checky my own font
subdir and it does have the system attribute set. When I removed the
system attribute the menu item "install new font" disapeared. I then
reset the attribute to system and checked the font folder, still no
"install new font". When I rebooted my system the "install new font"
was back.
Hope this is helpful

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS
========
When you open the Fonts folder in Windows Explorer, the following
commands
may be missing from the Fonts folder menus:
- From the File menu:
- Open
- Print
- Install New Font
- From the View Menu:
- List Fonts By Similarity
- Hide Variations (Bold, Italics, Etc.)
CAUSE
=====
This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:
- The System attribute is no longer set for the Fonts folder. The
Fonts folder must have its System attribute set to work correctly.
- The Fontext.dll file may be missing or damaged, causing the menus
to contain only the commands for a generic folder.
- The Desktop.ini file may be missing or damaged. Note that you do
not
see the Desktop.ini file when you view the Fonts folder. To see the
file, open an MS-DOS session and view the Windows\Fonts folder, or
use the Find command on the Start menu.
RESOLUTION
==========
To restore the correct commands for the Fonts folder, follow these
steps:
1. At a command prompt, switch to the Windows folder by typing the
following command:
cd\windows
NOTE: If Windows 95 is installed in a folder other than the Windows
folder, adjust these instructions accordingly.
2. Type the following command:
attrib fonts +s
3. Shut down and restart Windows 95.
NOTE: You cannot set the System attribute for the Fonts folder within
the
graphical user interface.
If the commands for the Fonts folder are not restored, the Fontext.dll
file may be missing or damaged. To replace the Fontext.dll file,
follow
these steps:
1. Restart Windows 95 in MS-DOS mode.
2. Change to the Windows\System folder.
3. If the Fontext.dll file exists, rename it Fontext.old.
4. Extract a new copy of the Fontext.dll file from the original
Windows
95 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\System folder.
For information about using the Extract tool, please see the
following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
ARTICLE-ID: Q129605
TITLE : Using the Windows 95 Extract Tool (Extract.exe)
5. Restart Windows 95 normally.
If the issue persists, the Desktop.ini file may be missing or damaged.
To
replace the Desktop.ini file, follow these steps:
1. Restart Windows 95 in MS-DOS mode.
2. Change to the Windows\Fonts folder.
3. If the Desktop.ini file exists, rename it Desktop.old.
4. Extract a new copy of the Desktop.ini file from the original
Windows
95 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows\Fonts folder.

This problem happens when the system attribute of the "Fonts" folder is
removed. This attribute can't be changed with the Explorer.
Open a DOS session, move to the Windows folder, enter ATTRIB FONTS +S and
restart Windows. Now you should get the correct menus by opening the Fonts
folder.

Try performing from a dos window "attrib c:\windows\fonts +s" where
windows is the directory where Win95 is installed. I had this problem
and once the SYSTEM (+S) attribute was added to the hidden FONTS
directory the option reappeared.

This sounds like a problem that I've hit. The "add new font" option has disappeared. You
can fix it by going into DOS and changing the attribute of the font folder to S (attrib +s).

Also the new version of Tweek UI has a "repair font folder" option.
Paul...
I have heard that the repair functions in Tweak UI can really screw
things up, with the possible exception of the Repair Icons.

I'm really confused about TweakUI. I d/l'd it and had so many
problems I got rid of it. Yet others talk about it as though they use
it often and have experienced no problems. Is there an updated
version more recent than April 96?
