I recently made an unbelievable discovery. While using
Borland's Winsight for debugging purposes, I accidentally
noticed that the timer ID used by Solitaire (the game
distributed with Windows 3.1, SOL.EXE) has the value of
666. This was not a coincidence, as the program requests
for this specific timer ID. This timer ticks more than once
a second.
As you can understand I immediately quitted playing Solitaire
and after some time edited the binary file to change the timer
ID.
Just thought that people who care about these things should
know. Of course I don't imply nonsense of the style "MS is
the company of the devil" and other such crap ! Most pro-
bably this is some kind of a joke from the programmer, but
it did give me a chill when I saw it - some jokes aren't
_that_ funny ...
Natasa Manousopoulou
For those of us who aren't looking for a "boogey man" behind every tree
or trying hard to read significance into every tiny occurrence, this is
utter nonsense. I, for one, had never even heard of the "devil"
of the 6's until 10 or 15 years ago, and would be willing to wager that
a majority of people have never heard of it. As for one individual
deciding to put a "joke" into a Microsoft program, that joke would have
to get past a myriad of programmers and many thousands of beta testers.
I guess 666 is one perfectly good number that we will all have to stop
using just to appease some people. Let's see: 663, 664, 665, 667 (???)
It'll play hell with math, won't it?

ROTFLMAO!!!!!
And I thought the "MS Virus In Win95" was funny! This is hilarious!
This guy doesn't "imply nonsense of the style 'MS is the company of the
devil' and other such crap", but he quit the game immediately and
edited the binary.
I suggest you now call over your village shaman and let him exorcise
your machine by throwing RAM chips on the floor and reading the way
they fall. Then power down your machine, unplug it, twist the power
cord 7 times while chanting "OOOOOmmmmmmmmmm!" Plug it back in, making
sure that you only use your right thumb and index finger. Turn on the
machine while laying on your back with your head facing exactly 12.5
degrees from the North star. When you see the system startup screen,
avert your eyes, lest the CRT rays lead you astray. After your system
has come up, make sure to push the reset button twice, and sent a Susan
B. Anthony dollar to the Salvation Army anonymously. Presto! Your fears
have been quashed.
BTW - the guys in the white coats outside your door just want to "talk
to you" for a few minutes.
If this was a joke - Never mind!!!!!!!!!

In fact, this is very similar to what was needed to start the three LAN
Manager servers I once managed. (No, I'm not joking.) This was necessary to
make sure that the right computer started as Main domain server. Otherwise
things just didn't work correctly.
The machines were all mounted in a 19" rack, and the best way to get them to
boot correctly was to dance around the rack, chanting Ooooommmmm and burning
resistors.
God I'm so happy my current work has NetWare...

Actually atheism and lack of superstition have saved me from being
possesed by demons and witches casting spells on me. You are quite
entitled to your views on religion etc.and who knows you may be right.
Your values are just as valid as anybody elses, and conversely anybody
elses values are just as valid as yours.
The original post was implying that the number '666' in a program
could make you a slave of the devil or something. If this is in fact
true (which I doubt) don't read this message 'coz it contains the
number '666' twice!

And could we move this thread to alt.religion.advocacy NOW!

This is all funny coming from someone whose first name is 'A Satan' spelled backwards...

mikemCkinnon - "Thank god I'm an atheist"

I was just reading through this thread and was wondering if anybody
caught the "A Satan" thing. It is really pretty good. It reminds me
of a series of books called the "Incantaions of Immortality" or some
such by Piers Anthony. A really good set of books covering this
entire thread.
If that is your name, and you are that concerned about 666, then I
would suggest changing your name.
I also go a kick from one of the tag lines, the one about Senator
Exon.
