While attempting to install the Visual Studio Service Pack 3, I got
the message about it not being compatible with the Windows CE Toolkit.
After searching Microsoft's web site, and reading a plethora of old
news posts about this problem, I have come to the conclusion that an
upgrade to the WCE TK is still not available. Is this the case? If
so, will there be an upgrade in the forseeable future?

I've noticed the problem too. I've had the toolkit for over a year, and no
upgrade. I think MSoft can't cure the problem without breaking something else.
COM most likely.

I see. I didn't realize that it has been that long. Now let me ask a related
question. If an update is not expected in the foreseeable future, is there an
update in the works at all?

I'm pretty sure the main "incompatibility" is that the SP3 _installation_
overwrites some environment variables and/or registry settings that were
tweaked by the CE Toolkit/SDK installations. I've been using VC 6 with the
VC 6 SP3 and CE toolkits/SDKs for a few months.

I started with a clean install, and made sure the installation order was VC
6, VC 6 SP3, CE Toolkit, CE SDKs. I _think_ you will be OK if you install
the VC 6 SP 3 and then reinstall the CE toolkit and SDKs. Uninstalling the
CE toolkits and SDKs before installing the VC 6 SP3 might be safer. If you
really can uninstall everything and start from scratch, that would certainly
be safer. But I have little faith in uninstallations (other than format :-)

I've seen several posts from folks installing the CE Toolkit over SP3, but
I read one post where someone was reporting what a Microsoft engineer had
told him. Apparently, when you install CE Toolkit over SP3, it replaces
actual files that were updated by SP3 with the older Toolkit files and that
eventually this will cause problems. Because of this, I'm wary of installing
both. Things might be working for you but I wonder if others might be having
problems.

FWIW, I have applied SP2. Are there major issues that are addressed by SP3?
Or can I live without it and wait until Microsoft updates the CE Toolkit?

I beleive the prior post is absolutely correct. I tried installing the VC6, and
SP3 stuff BEFORE WINCE Toolkit and SDK on brand new machine, and had all kinds
of trouble. Nothing worked well until I got rid of SP3 on that machine. I doubt
that MSoft would not publish that fix if it actually solved thier problems.
