Down in the "Function Key" reference (click to open sections of this web
page page):
Ctl+F4 will close the document but leave Word open if there are other
doucments still open.
Alt+F4 will close Word 10.
Windows at least through Windows 7 applications generally have a small x
at the top right corner of each window that you can click on to close
that window, which would be the equivalent of closing that document or
closing that application.
Alt+F4 and Ctl+F4 work in many applicaitons, as does clicking on the red
x in the upper right corner. (Note: when browsing, these keystrokes
generally work on the browser, not any "application" running inside the
browser.)
