Is there really no way to add multi-word phrases to the Word custom
dictionary? A classic example is "annus horribilis" - I don't want
"annus" on its own be considered a valid spelling, but in the phrase
"annus horribilis" it's obviously correct. I've even tried using a
non-breaking space with no luck.

I don't believe there's any workaround for this except to enter the
individual components. The annoying thing is that the dictionary appears to
accept "annus horribilis" (with or without nonbreaking space), but it
doesn't do any good.
