Windows users:

I am was trying to help a friend of mine out with an installation of Norton
Anti Virus 2000 on his Windows XP box.

We clicked install, then picked the "NT 4.0, Windows 2000 version", after
having done so we got the message:

Norton AntiVirus 2001 has a known compatibility issue with this version of
Windows. The symevent.sys driver installed by this program is incompatible
with this version of Windows. For more information, contact Symantec.

Is this true in what it says, or it is a meaningless warning?

Sometimes when we run DOS programs, and also when we tried to click beyond
this warning, we get the following error message as well (it happens with
other programs too, so its not just related to the installation of NAV under
XP):

In this case the error popped up once, and we ignored it, and it never back,
but with "edit" (run from a Command Prompt) we always get this error, what
does it mean? How do I correct it (he claims he got it with Windows 2000
also before he did the XP upgrade, at least with edit):

Command Prompt - edit testfile
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. Virtual Device
Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

If we click ignore, it seems to work fine. But what is this error? What is
it telling us? How do we get rid of it permanently?

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Norton 2001 is not compatible with XP, you need to use Norton 2002.
Even then I had a lot of trouble getting NAV to install properly. I
finally had to do a totally clean install (following FORMAT) of XP and
then immediately afterward, System Works.

What version of System Works works with XP?

Nicholas, Peter, et al.:

Yes the customer told me they are in the process of getting Norton
System Works Professional, I presume that if the NSW PRO is marked on the
box as being good for XP, then it will work.
